LiFePO4 cells provide the following advantages over Li-ion and lead-acid batteries:
Chemically, LiFePO4 cells are substantially more stable and inert. The phosphate-based cathode material will not burn at high temperatures or if the battery is handled incorrectly. LiFePO4 is therefore significantly safer for electric vehicles and mobile robotics.
Comparing LiFePO4 cells to Lead Acid or Li-ion cells, LiFePO4 cells have a substantially longer lifespan. With good care, the LiFeP04 offers around 3000 cycles and up to 70% DOD ( Depth of Discharge). Moreover, a cell with a reduced self discharge rate has a substantially longer shelf life.
The performance of the LiFePO4 cells is superior than that of a typical 1C Li-ion 18650 cell. The LiFePO4 1C cell has a 6A discharge rate compared to the frequently used Li-ion cell's 2 A rating. Moreover, there is hardly any voltage loss during discharge, compared to a lead acid battery's substantially larger voltage drop.
LiFePO4 is a benign substance that doesn't contaminate the environment and doesn't include any rare earth minerals. As a result, it is a significantly more environmentally friendly option than lead acid and lithium batteries.
