Will new LED streetlight fixtures produce unwanted spill light?
As the majority of the light is directed downward to the street and sidewalk, the new lights will prevent unwanted light spill into houses and properties. However, if a homeowner claims that the new LEDs are allowing too much light into their home, the Town may install a house shield to restrict unwanted light.
What does color temperature mean?
Illumination color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) units. When LED streetlights were originally introduced, the majority of applications used 5,000 Kelvin, a very chilly or white color temperature. These were quite sharp and almost blue. Then, applications switched to 4,000K, sometimes known as "moonlight." Several respectable sources have opined the deleterious effects of 4,000K illumination on human sleep patterns, nocturnal animal behavior, and light pollution. The Town has opted for 3,000 kelvin LED lighting because of the color's mellow but effective appearance.
