When ultraviolet light, also known as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, is released at its most effective wavelength of 253.7 nanometers (nm), it has the greatest ability to kill germs and render microbes inert (UVGI). Instead of bonding across the double helix as is typically the case, this leads two nearby thymine or cytosine bases to join with one another.
Pyrimidine dimers prevent a DNA molecule from functioning correctly, which causes the organism to die or be unable to reproduce. When an organism can't reproduce, it loses its ability to transmit illness.
