UVB
UVB, which has a wavelength range of 275–320 nm, is known as medium-wave erythemal ultraviolet radiation. It has moderate penetrating ability, though the shorter wavelengths within this band are largely absorbed by clear glass. Most UVB in sunlight is absorbed by the ozone layer, with less than 2% reaching the Earth's surface. It is most intense during summer and in the afternoon.
UVB exposure has an erythemal (sunburn) effect on human skin. In moderate amounts, it supports mineral metabolism and vitamin D synthesis. However, prolonged or excessive exposure can lead to tanning, redness, and peeling.
UVB lamps, such as those used in medical therapy and plant growth, are made with special glass that blocks wavelengths below 254 nm and use phosphors designed to emit around 300 nm.
