Are LED lights brighter than other types of bulb?
It's claimed that LED lights are brighter than other kinds of bulbs. Let's investigate.
Technically speaking, "brightness" is not a measurement. "Does that look bright enough to you?" is a question about perception. Light intensity is measured and is expressed in lux using a lux meter.
However, LEDS are frequently referred to as being brighter than other types of bulbs, and we understand what you mean. Therefore, for the sake of clarity, we will use the word.
How do lights work?
The amount of visible light is measured in lumens.
What kind of lighting is the brightest?
LED lights are the most energy-efficient and provide a brighter light for the same wattage when compared to other forms of lighting products.
Today's high-quality LED lighting provide about 170 lumens per watt, compared to about 110 for a fluorescent.
But that's only a portion of the story!
While fluorescent and other conventional lights and bulbs are assessed using relative photometry, the lumen output of an LED is measured using absolute photometry (i.e., it is the entire output net of ballast and fixture). Therefore, the fixture and ballast are not taken into account.
The 110 lumens previously mentioned only apply to the bulb or tube. It may decrease in absolute photometry to as little as 50 lumens, for instance, in a recessed fitting.
Whenever lumen per watt is stated in absolute terms, make sure to check that.
