CAN YOU SAVE ENERGY BY DIMMING LEDS?
The greatly increased energy efficiency of LED lighting compared to conventional lighting systems is one of its distinguishing features. And it prompts the question: Can LEDs be dimmed to save even more energy? Absolute is the shortest response. But you need to be aware of a limitation with LEDs and dimming.
reducing LEDs
Although not all LED lights can be dimmed, those that can are split into two types to better illustrate how dimming works. PWM, also known as pulse width modulation, and analogue dimming are two different ways to dim LEDs.
PWM (pulse width modulation)
LEDs are turned on and off using pulse width modulation (PWM), which occurs at a faster rate than the brain can truly process. A dimmable LED bulb seems to be dimmed to around 25% of its total brightness when it alternates between being off for 75% of a second and on for the last quarter. By changing the amount of time the light is on per cycle, the light can be either brighter or dimmer. This approach allows precise control of both dimmerability and energy usage, and there is no perception of flashing or flickering light.
The drawback of PWM is that it can cause a buzzing sound that some people can hear. Low-quality PMW systems may contain subpar components that shake, distorting light and limiting dimming control.
Digital dimming
The amount of energy going into the LED is managed using analogue dimmers. The lights are always on, but their brightness varies depending on how much energy is being put into them. An LED driver serves as a switch in this technique to raise or lower DC voltage. Because of the fluctuating voltage, there are no noise issues and excellent control, although the light quality may be variable. Additionally, the dimming range itself is reliant on the current and calibre of the driver, making it relatively wasteful as there is always some degree of energy loss.
You will indeed save energy.
Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages, but dimmable LEDs unquestionably conserve energy. Additionally, the amount of energy you save depends entirely on the wattage you select. You are reducing energy use by the same percentage if your dimmer is set to 50%. Giving you the freedom to select the proper degree of light at any time of day or night and lowering your carbon footprint is a big benefit for businesses. Dimming the lights also reduces heat stress and safeguards your bulbs.
