high bay lamp
Facilities with ceilings higher than 25 feet, such as large stores, school gymnasiums, sports arenas, warehouses, and manufacturing plants, use high bay lighting.
While high-intensity discharge (HID) and fluorescent lamps still dominate the high bay lighting market, LED high bays have become more popular due to technological improvements. LED high bay lights are cost-effective due to their long bulb life; longer operation saves more energy and maintenance costs. High bay environments often provide the opportunity to control light levels based on occupancy and strategic use of daylight. While previous LED high bay products did not provide enough light for most high bay applications, some of the latest products can replace metal halide lamps up to 1,000 watts.
What are the options?
The type of light you choose and any controls you add can save energy and money.
lamps
In the past, if you wanted to upgrade a facility with old probe-start metal halide lamps, your options included fluorescent lamps (old low performance and new high performance), HID lamps, and ceramic metal halide lamps. Now you can choose LED high bays for almost any lighting application, including high bay lighting.
High Bay LED High Bay Lights feature rectangular and round fixtures and are a great alternative to high performance fluorescent and older HID lamps. With reduced costs, LED high bay lights surpass fluorescent lamps by offering:
· Equivalent (or higher) efficacy
· Longer life
· Similar color quality
· Better controllability
· Increased flexibility with light distribution patterns
controls
Even if only a small portion of it is occupied at any given time, a large high bay venue may have lights on throughout the facility. In these cases, the ability to turn lights on when needed and turn them off when not needed can save a lot of energy. Occupancy sensors and timers can save even more, but you need to use them in conjunction with a lighting system that works well with the controls.

HID light sources have long startup and restart times, so they are not well suited for control-based occupancy. But you can dim them to around 50% of their initial power. Fluorescent lamps are a better controllable option due to their faster start-up time, but frequent switching can reduce lamp life. LED high bay lights are the easiest to control - they respond instantly, and constant switching won't shorten their lifespan.
For some installations, skylights and daylighting controls, which adjust electric light levels based on available daylight, can also provide significant energy savings. In addition, the lighting control system can automatically turn the lights on and off according to a preset schedule, rather than relying on a human being to remember to turn off the lights
Lifetime and Light Quality LED high bay lights have a longer lifespan than HID and most fluorescent products. LED high bay lights also have the potential for similar color quality, better controllability, and better light distribution patterns. You can waste less light in unneeded areas (such as the tops of storage racks) and provide a more even light distribution where you want them (such as objects in storage racks). LED high bay lights help you meet your desired light levels with fewer total lumens.
Occupancy Sensor LED high bay lights work well with switch occupancy sensors because frequent cycling doesn't shorten their lifespan like fluorescent lights do. And, unlike HID lighting, LED high bay lights don't take long to warm up or restart.
Dimming and dimming can improve the efficiency of LED high bay lights and prolong bulb life. Fluorescent lamps lose efficiency when dimmed, and metal halide lamps change color when you dim them below 50% of full output. Keep in mind that some LED high bay products also change color when dimmed.
Dirt and Contamination Many high bay LED high bay light fixtures accumulate dust on the top horizontal surfaces, which can reduce the fixture's ability to keep the fixture cool. Fixtures with vertical fins are less prone to clogging due to dirt buildup.
Air temperature Since LED high bay lights will perform better in cooler conditions, the most promising early high bay installations of LED high bay lights are in refrigerated facilities. Since then, LED high bay products have become more efficient and high bay installations have expanded to general storage applications. You should compare the temperature rating of the light fixture to the expected ambient conditions.
Sensitive materials LED high bay lights emit very little infrared or ultraviolet radiation, so materials such as food or fabrics have a longer shelf life. In addition, LED high bay lights are mercury free - an advantage in food handling environments - and can reduce the cost of end-of-life disposal of the lamps.
