High Efficiency LED High Bay Light Fixtures
Efficiency is not the only factor that should be considered when choosing a high bay, but it is certainly an important part of the decision-making process.
LED technology and luminaires are in a mode of continuous improvement in performance. Performance standards for LED packages, drivers and fixtures continue to rise. As a result of these continuous improvements, we decided to collect some data in a brave quest to discover the most efficient LED high bay luminaires in the lighting industry.
Simply put, Luminous Efficiency is the ratio of light output to power measured in lumens per watt (lm/W).
Efficacy is of course an important consideration when choosing almost any type of fixture. But that shouldn't be the only consideration. Just as price, aesthetics, ease of installation, quality, warranty, manufacturer reputation, and other factors are often not the only factors that determine a light fixture, efficacy is only one metric that weighs many factors when lighting decision makers evaluate their options. Decision makers determine the importance and weight applied to power factors compared to other important considerations.
It should also be noted that achieving efficiency often requires trade-offs. Light distribution, glare, diode images, visual comfort, and other factors can be negatively impacted in ultra-efficient luminaires. The best manufacturers have found effective ways to maximize efficacy while minimizing the impact of those potentially negative downsides. Essentially, high bay fixtures are typically installed at heights of 15' - 40', so the negative impact of reduced visual comfort is generally acceptable and tolerable.

method
There may be a dozen different satisfying ways we could slice and dice the data to arrive at this list. We chose to keep the list relatively short and decided to go with the following approaches, which we believe provide a useful snapshot for lighting professionals. Since all source information is publicly available for download, interested parties who want to conduct research outside of our list can do so by visiting the DOE and DLC websites.
source:
Information downloaded on July 24, 2021 from the DesignLights Alliance Eligible Products List. If you have questions about the specs we reference on inside.lighting, please note that we pull data directly from the DLC website.
Information was collected using the reported efficacy and reported CCT for each fixture. Initially, we only wanted to report luminaires that were actually tested by the DLC, but doing so would eliminate a large number of high-efficiency luminaires from many well-known manufacturers.
Fixtures:
· Fully furnished, complete LED high bay light; not a retrofit kit.
· Fixtures must also be commercially available. (ie, if the fixture is not referenced on the manufacturer's website, we'll exclude it.)
Color rendering index:
All fixtures must be greater than 70 CRI.
Color temperature:
All fixtures must be less than 5250K.
