how many standard lux need for a badminton court?

Recommended lighting levels for a badminton court (horizontal illuminance, measured at floor level):

Level of Play Recommended Average Lux Uniformity (min/avg) Notes
Recreational / Casual / School PE 200–300 lux (often targeting ~300) ≥ 0.5 Basic visibility for social play
Training / Club / Academy 300–500 lux ≥ 0.6 Comfortable for regular practice and club matches
Competition / Tournament (non-TV) 500–750+ lux ≥ 0.7 Local to regional competitions
National / International (BWF) ≥ 1,000 lux ≥ 0.7 Official BWF requirement for Grade 1–3 events
Televised / Broadcast / Olympics 1,500–1,600+ lux ≥ 0.7 Includes vertical illuminance for cameras

Key Points from Standards

Badminton World Federation (BWF): Minimum 1,000 lux evenly distributed across the court for international tournaments. Higher (1,500–1,600 lux) is preferred for TV broadcasts.

Badminton England guidelines often recommend around 500 lux average (min 300, max 600) for good club/premier facilities, while noting BWF's 1,000 lux target for international events.

Many practical industry guides align with:

Recreational: 200–300 lux

Club/training: 300–500 lux

Competitive: 500–1,000+ lux

Other Important Requirements

Uniformity is as critical as the average lux value - dark spots make the shuttle appear to change speed.

Glare control is essential: Lights should never be placed directly above the playing area. Best practice is side-row placement (parallel to the sidelines, over the run-off/buffer zones) so players don't look into fixtures when tracking high clears or serves.

Color temperature: Usually 5,000–6,500 K (cool/daylight white) for good contrast with the shuttle.

CRI: Preferably ≥ 80 (higher is better).

Flicker-free LED drivers are strongly recommended because of the shuttle's extreme speed.

Summary recommendation

Everyday community or school court → aim for 300–500 lux.

Serious club or competition court → 500–750 lux minimum.

Tournament / BWF-standard court → 1,000 lux or higher.
