       Flicker is the change in the intensity or brightness of light over a certain period of time. Flicker occurs in many lighting applications, including slow-motion filming on television (especially sports channels), tunnel lighting, various areas of general lighting, and workplaces that use fast-rotating machinery. Flicker can affect human health, and the degree of impact depends on the frequency of flicker and the individual's sensitivity to flicker. Although high-frequency stroboscopic flicker does not have a significant impact on the human body, low-frequency stroboscopic flicker below 120 Hz can easily affect human health.

1. So how is LED strobe generated?


There are many reasons for flickering. For control gear manufacturers, ripple current is one of the reasons, and it is a major culprit of strobe. Ripple current is the AC component that remains after rectification and filtering. The ripple current is superimposed on DC, with different frequencies and curves. This AC component causes the power of the LED module to fluctuate, which in turn changes the brightness. The amount and frequency of superimposed AC is the decisive factor for flicker generation.


The carrier technology and lamp design used by the LED light source are also important factors for stroboscopic flicker. For example, if a phosphor is used as a converter material for an LED light source, the layer of material has a capacitive effect that removes a small fraction of the superimposed AC.


       2. How to avoid the stroboscopic problem in LED lighting?


Although the LED itself does not have the risk of stroboscopic, LED dimming, especially through pulse width dimming, will aggravate the stroboscopic, and even cause the stroboscopic to appear in the first place. In order to avoid stroboscopic, it is feasible to use other dimming methods, such as analog dimming. In order to counteract the disadvantages of analog dimming with low dimming values, hybrid dimming is becoming an ideal choice.


Ripple current data in the drive is the first indicator of flicker risk. For more reliable information to make an informed decision, view the data on the entire luminaire. Often the luminaire manufacturer provides details of the driver used, the superimposed AC power, the dimming method, and the frequency curve. In particular, the frequency curve between 0 and 120 Hz best illustrates the risk of flickering. The frequency range between 10 and 70 Hz deserves special consideration, as strobes in this range have the greatest impact on human health. What's more, avoiding PWM dimming completely guarantees flicker-free ambient conditions.
