How to choose LED high bay light
So are you interested in switching to LED lighting? Whether you are attracted by longevity, advanced energy efficiency standards or durable features, there is an LED high bay light that can meet your needs. While the upfront cost of this technology may be higher, the price has been coming down and it will save you money in the long run. Keep an eye out for rebate programs in your area, which can significantly reduce the initial investment.
Here's how to make the switch.
make a list
Calculate the number and type of light bulbs in your home. You might be surprised how many bulbs you have! Most people will have a marking on them that tells you the wattage, voltage, and even the base of the bulb. If you're not sure what kind of bulb you're using, try Camel - it'll help you find the bulb you're looking for in the shortest steps. Our reference chart is another way to help determine the style of light bulb you have. The most commonly used bulb in the home is the A19 medium thread bulb. Reflector styles are often used for recessed lighting, track or outdoor security floodlights, while candlestick styles are often used for decorative fixtures such as chandeliers and sconces. Depending on your home or business application, you may also be interested in replacing fluorescent tubes. Those have an LED too! List your current bulb shapes and sizes to help you find equivalents when shopping.

What color light do you want?
Choosing the right lighting look for your space can make all the difference. The Kelvin scale is used to describe the appearance of light. Lower degrees Kelvin means warmer yellow-white light, and higher degrees Kelvin means blue-white light. Warm white (2700 Kelvin) Z is close to traditional incandescent light bulbs and is favored in bedrooms and living rooms. It provides warm and inviting light. Neutral White (3500 Kelvin) can be used in almost every space - it's neutral. Office/workspaces typically use this color temperature. Kitchens, bathrooms and workspaces may benefit from cooler color temperatures (4100-5000 K). Daylight White (6500K) can be used for task lighting, detailing or many industrial applications.
Know your wattage (brightness or light output) from your lumens
Once upon a time, we used to refer to wattage as a measure of the brightness of a light bulb. In fact, wattage represents the amount of energy a bulb uses, and in traditional incandescent bulbs, higher wattages are associated with brighter bulbs. However, newer and more efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and LED high bays use far less energy. Therefore, wattage is no longer an accurate indicator of bulb brightness. Instead, look for the lumen (lm) rating, which describes how much light a bulb emits or how bright it is. This is the most accurate way to judge the brightness of a bulb compared to an incandescent bulb.
Calculate your financial and environmental savings
LEDs are one of the more expensive types of bulbs on the market today, but recent advances in LED technology have brought down costs significantly. To help reduce upfront costs, many electric utilities offer rebate programs. LED high bay lights are an investment and over their long lifespan, they will save you money due to their high energy efficiency. They have the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) of all bulb types. Our video explains the total cost of ownership in more detail.
