Important Considerations in the Design of Energy Efficient Factory Lighting Installations

Important Considerations in the Design of Energy Efficient Factory Lighting Installations

If you're considering installing energy-efficient industrial lighting technology in your plant, including the latest industrial LED lighting accessories - light-emitting diodes, there are a number of key factors to consider when designing a new lighting system.

Light intensity required by the factory

A good factory lighting installation contractor should be able to point out problems with uneven light distribution in existing industrial lighting systems (such as dim areas or insufficient light levels for factory work).

Height and location of existing factory lights

Factory buildings tend to be large, so industrial low-bay and high-bay lighting accessories (usually using 250-watt or 400-watt sodium or metal halide lamps) can be difficult to reach (requiring to rent a scissor lift or cherry picker). Newer energy efficient industrial lighting systems such as LED lighting and induction lighting have a long lamp life - if your facility has maintenance issues, these industrial lights should be specified by your industrial lighting contractor at the time of your factory lighting installation.

Factory lighting exposed to dust/moisture

This is important to understand because some new energy-efficient factory lighting installations, such as high-bay and low-bay industrial LED lighting, may accumulate debris on their heat sinks that need to be removed to continue to function properly. Factory lighting contractors installing well-designed industrial lighting systems will use the correct IP rating on low-bay or high-bay industrial lighting accessories.

Plant occupancy rate

Evaluating plant occupancy will determine the potential to use energy-efficient lighting systems to automatically switch or reduce light intensity based on the occupancy of a given area. This can be achieved using PIR and microwave presence detection. Factory lighting installers with the latest energy efficient automatic control industrial lighting systems can program these systems to achieve significant energy savings at high light levels (750 lux) but low occupancy.

Availability of natural lighting in the factory floor

Much like presence detection control, modern industrial lighting systems can be programmed to automatically adjust their output in response to available daylight. Factory lighting surveys can flag the possibility of using such freely available lamps ahead of the specification of any industrial lighting system.
