FLASHLIGHTS ARE A PROBLEM because they are so simple to misplace. If you're anything like me, you probably have one hidden away but aren't precisely sure where. Maybe it's tucked away in a drawer or down in the cellar. The unknown. And even if you do manage to locate it, there is no guarantee that the cells will still be functional. The lesson of this tale? We are pretty much in trouble when the lights go out. Bulb Light by Lin Guo Hui for the MoMA Design Store is a lifesaver for those who are perpetually unprepared. The battery is not only rechargeable, but your lamp serves as its most apparent dock. Guo Hui claims, "I had a blackout and my torch's battery had died, so I had nothing else to light up my house that night." "So that's when it occurred to me to use something we use every day to create an emergency light source."

When a 40 watt LED light is screwed into a standard socket, Guo Hui built a small rechargeable battery into the extended base to enable charging. You can then turn on the bulb for up to three hours of emergency illumination by simply extending its plastic neck into a handle when you need to use it as a flashlight. Guo Hui says, "The bulb had to be long-life, light, and emit as little heat as possible so we can carry it as a normal flashlight." "The technical processes were really difficult, despite the fact that the design was quite simple in theory."

Guo Hui claims that this light has a current regulator that enables it to be used with AC currents that can vary from 85-235 volts, despite the fact that the base of the LED bulb can be made to suit the socket of different countries. He says that the same bulb can essentially run on 110-volt household current in the United States and 220-volt current in China, Europe, and other markets. BW's bulbs cost $45 each, so outfitting your complete house with them won't be cheap. However, keep in mind that the money you spend now will be money you never have to spend on a replacement flashlight.
