Two Ways to Convert High Bay Lights to LED High Bay Lights
New lamps or new lamps retrofitted with high bay LEDs?
When lighting performance degrades, owners and operators of commercial, manufacturing, and industrial facilities can't help but wonder, should I use LED lights to maintain them? Or does it take the opportunity to retrofit them into LED high bay fixtures?
1. For retrofitting LED linear high bay light
Fluorescent lamps F54T5HO or F32T8 lamps are conventional linear high bay lamps with different retrofit methods.
1.1 How to replace the F32T8 fluorescent lamp?
· If your ballast is relatively new (3-4 years old), use ballast-compatible plug-and-play LED T8 tubes. The advantage of using this method is that you can just screw in the lamp without replacing the entire fixture. The premise is that it must be compatible with the ballast, otherwise the best LED tube will be destroyed. One might ask, why not switch to T12 tube? In fact, it has fallen behind the market, with the T8 consuming 40% less energy than the T12. Why not choose T8?
· Opt for ballastless t8 led bulbs. This allows the ballast to be removed or bypassed from the fixture and to connect the socket directly to line voltage. For T8 with double-ended wiring, a shunt receptacle can be used. Alternatively, if your existing outlet is in good condition, there is no need to replace the outlet, which makes installation easier.
· Use LED linear high bay light. When your traditional light fixtures are over 10 years old, you start to find that some ballasts fail. In this case, retrofit led lights are not suitable for retrofitting your warehouse or high bay lighting. Instead, you should opt for 2' 4' led linear high bay lights.
1.2 How to replace the F54T5HO fluorescent lamp?
There are very few DLC certified led t5 light tubes on the market, so you can remove the F54T5HO traditional light fixture and choose the energy saving and environmentally friendly led linear high bay light fixture. They provide better lighting quality, require less maintenance and last longer.
2. Used to modify UFO LED high bay light
High Intensity Discharge, Metal Halide, High Pressure Sodium bulbs, they are installed on traditional round high bay light fixtures, so I put them in the retrofit guide category.
2.1 How to replace them?
· Use plug-and-play led bulbs, like the led T8 tubes mentioned above. The most important point is that the led bulbs you have to choose are compatible with the ballasts on the old light fixtures. When choosing this replacement, check that the make and model of the current fixture is acceptable.
3. What are their advantages and disadvantages?
3.1 Retrofitting LED bulbs/tubes
advantage:
Low purchase cost - LED lights cost between $3 and $20, half the price of new lights
Low installation cost - no need to remove ballasts or fixtures, just screw on the bulb/lamp.
harm:
Low lifespan - I believe ballasts in most applications will age, in which case the lifespan of the entire lighting fixture will be shortened even with high quality bulbs.
Power Loss - The presence of the ballast means that its power needs to be added to the lamp, i.e. a 400w metal halide lamp plus 58 watts for a total of 458 watts.
Heat generation - Generally speaking, conventional lamps have poor heat dissipation, which will undoubtedly become another point of failure for the system.
3.2 Retrofit LED High Bay Lights

Fast return on investment - With tax rebates, tax cuts and energy savings, you'll find faster-than-expected returns.
No ballast - according to the needs of more and more customers (abandoning ballasts), led skylight lights are directly wired. Excessive power losses, excessive maintenance costs and excessive space temperatures are avoided for the owner.
Add Other Options - Getting a new LED light stand adds some extra benefits, including multiple mounting options (O-Hook/U-Bracket/Pendant), optional motion sensor for more energy, or a wide range of voltages Range AC100-347V/AC277-480V (for commercial, residential, industrial lighting). The upfront costs are high - to be precise, led hibay fixtures are more expensive compared to the other alternatives mentioned above. But consider the long term, its energy savings and less maintenance will definitely create additional returns for you.
