What color temperature of LED lights does cow like?

Cows are more sensitive to the color temperature (color) and light management (such as intensity and cycle) of light. Appropriate LED lighting can increase milk production and improve the health of the herd. The following are scientific suggestions for LED light color temperature and light management for dairy cows:

1. Suitable LED color temperature for dairy cows

Cold white light (5000K-6500K)

Simulate natural daylight, with a bluish-white color temperature, which can increase the activity and feed intake of dairy cows.

Recommended scenario: supplementary light during the day (especially in winter when light is insufficient).

Scientific basis: Studies have shown that cold white light can stimulate melatonin regulation in dairy cows and promote a state of wakefulness.

Warm white light (2700K-3500K)

The color temperature is yellowish-red, close to dusk light, suitable for nighttime or resting areas.

Function: Reduce stress and help cows relax (such as after milking or during calving).

Adjustable color temperature system (intelligent control)

5000K during the day → 3000K at night, simulate the natural circadian rhythm, and optimize the biological clock of dairy cows.

2. Light intensity and cycle

Intensity:

Feeding area/milking area: 150-200 lux

Rest area: 50-100 lux (avoid excessive brightness affecting sleep).

Lighting time:

16 hours of light + 8 hours of darkness (classic increase in production plan): can increase milk production by 10%-15%.

Key point: The dark period must be completely dark (avoid red light interfering with melatonin secretion).

3. Other key factors

Avoid excessive blue light (>6500K):

Long-term high color temperature blue light may increase cow anxiety (need to be used in a balanced way).

No flicker design:

Choose a high-frequency dimming (>20kHz) LED power supply to reduce cow visual fatigue.

Even lighting:

Avoid shadow areas (cows are sensitive to sudden changes in light and dark).

4. Recommended lamp types

High-bay LED lamps (IP65 waterproof): suitable for top lighting of cow sheds (such as BENWEI agricultural lighting series).

Dimmable and color temperature adjustable lamps: intelligent control system (such as Osram Lightify agricultural solution).

5. Scientific basis

Research by Michigan State University in the United States: 16 hours of light can increase the annual milk production of dairy cows by about 800-1200 kg.

Experiment at Wageningen University in the Netherlands: At a color temperature of 5000K, dairy cows feed 15% longer than at 3000K.
