What is the difference between edge lit and backlit flat panels?

When it comes to flat panel displays, two terms that often come up are edge lit and backlit. But what do these terms really mean, and what is the difference between the two?

 

First, let's define what we mean by a flat panel display. This is any type of display, such as a television or computer monitor, that uses a flat panel to display images rather than a cathode ray tube (CRT). Flat panel displays come in many varieties, including LCD, LED, and OLED.

 

Now, let's move on to the two terms in question: edge lit and backlit. These terms refer to the way the light source is positioned in relation to the display panel. In an edge lit display, the light source (usually LEDs) is positioned around the perimeter of the display panel. The light shines inward and is diffused throughout the panel to create the image. In a backlit display, the light source is positioned behind the display panel.

 

So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of display?

Edge lit displays are often thinner and lighter than backlit displays, since the light source is located only around the edges rather than behind the entire panel. They can also be more energy-efficient, as the LEDs require less power than a larger backlight. On the other hand, edge lit displays may suffer from issues like uneven lighting and lower contrast, since the light diffuses across the entire panel to create the image.

 

Backlit displays, on the other hand, can offer higher brightness levels and better image quality overall. This is because the light source is positioned directly behind the panel, allowing for more even lighting and better contrast. However, backlit displays may be thicker and heavier than their edge lit counterparts, and they may require more energy to power the backlight.

 

Ultimately, the choice between an edge lit and backlit display will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If a thin, lightweight display is a priority, or if energy efficiency is important, an edge lit display may be the way to go. If image quality is your top concern, a backlit display may be the better choice.
