Why do we choose more round UFO high bay lights?
There are many different criteria that must be considered when choosing a lighting solution. The size of the venue, the height of the ceiling, the required light characteristics, and the type of light are just some of the factors to consider. Each space has its own requirements.
One of the most important considerations is the overall size of the space to be lit. Here, there is a significant difference between traditional spaces and large spaces with high ceilings. These larger structures, with ceiling heights ranging from 20 to 45 feet, are often found in industrial settings such as factories, workshops, and warehouses, or in other high-volume spaces such as gyms or large commercial establishments. Traditional lighting solutions, including regular light bulbs, recessed lights and luminaires, are simply not up to the task of adequately lighting these spaces.
In addition to light intensity, some other key requirements for large lighting solutions are uniformity and color correctness of the lighting. Workers in industrial buildings are often engaged in high-risk activities involving powerful machinery, so consistent and powerful lighting becomes a critical need to ensure safety and productivity.
High bay lights are the most common and practical solution for such lighting needs. High bay lights are very powerful and designed to meet the unique requirements of large areas. Metal halide (MH) lamps and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps have been the first choice for many years. These lamps use very different technology than traditional incandescent or fluorescent lamps. A side effect of this technique is that the MH and HPS lamps Z are effective in a round or round shape. This shape optimizes the life of the lamp and maximizes the amount of light cast in a particular direction.
Advances in lighting technology have led to more modern types of luminaires suitable for high bay applications. In particular, industrial LED lamps now generally outperform MH and HPS lamps in most aspects, including maintenance costs, energy efficiency, and lighting quality. They have the added advantage of being available in a variety of shapes, not just the round ones where MH and HPS lamps are limited. A common additional shape for industrial LED lights Z is a rectangle or bar, where the lights are arranged in a linear shape, increasing coverage and uniformity.

Modern LED technology allows us to manufacture and install non-circular high bay lights. Two of the more popular new shapes and layouts are linear and grid installations. However, in areas where high bay lights are required, the traditional round shape is still preferred. The main reason is consistency and continuity.
A large number of existing structures are equipped with standard circular lights, and there is often little incentive to invest in redesigning the lighting layout. Simply continuing to use the traditional round shape makes the most economic sense, as the time and money required to change the shape of the lamp can be better invested elsewhere.
Additionally, circular high bay lights benefit from a strong support ecosystem that already exists in the form of spare parts, standardized accessories and predictable labor costs. Many companies also have long-term maintenance contracts specifically for the lighting setups they already use. Moving to a new shape of light requires massive changes at multiple levels, and often there are not enough advantages to make a transition of this nature.
High bay lights are an integral part of the modern landscape with a long history behind them. Technology continues to advance and bring new innovations, but the classic round shape we are familiar with still exists in factories and industrial settings around the world.
