Optimize your cowshed lighting

Optimize your cowshed lighting

Client: A Dairy Farm Owner, Slovakia
Sector: Agriculture / Livestock Farming
Project: Comprehensive Lighting System Upgrade for Two Cattle Barns
Solution Provider: Benwei Lighting

Executive Summary

A progressive dairy farmer in Slovakia sought to modernize the lighting systems in two identical cattle barns. His goal was to move beyond basic illumination to an advanced, biologically-tuned system that would actively support the cows' circadian rhythms, improve herd health, and stimulate production. Benwei Lighting delivered a complete, customized solution using a combination of full-spectrum, blue-spectrum, and red-spectrum LED T8 tubes, all managed by an intelligent dimming and timing control system. This case study outlines the challenge, our tailored solution, and the sophisticated implementation that meets both the farmer's practical and biological lighting requirements.

The Challenge: Beyond Basic Illumination

The client owned two large-scale cattle barns, each measuring 72m (L) × 11.25m (W) × 3.8m (H), with an additional side shed of 72m × 3.9m per barn. The primary challenge was not simply to light the space, but to design a complete lighting scheme that would:

Support Bovine Circadian Rhythms: Mimic natural daylight cycles to regulate the cows' sleep-wake patterns, melatonin production, and overall well-being.

Stimulate Specific Biological Responses: Use specific light wavelengths to encourage higher activity levels during key periods and potentially stimulate milk production and reproductive cycles.

Provide Functional Illumination: Ensure adequate light levels (>150 lux) for daily farm operations, animal monitoring, and sanitation, while being energy-efficient and durable in a farm environment.

Offer Automated Control: Require a system that could automatically switch specific light spectra on and off at predetermined times without manual intervention.

The Benwei Lighting Solution: A Spectrum-Based, Intelligent Lighting System

Our approach began with a detailed analysis of the barn layout and the specific lighting needs for different bovine activities. We proposed a multi-spectral lighting strategy using our high-performance IP67-rated T8 LED tubes, known for their durability, dust and moisture resistance, and energy efficiency.

1. Tailored Spectral Configuration:
We recommended three distinct light spectra, each serving a unique purpose:

Full Spectrum White Light (20W): To provide high-quality, daylight-mimicking illumination for general visibility and farm operations, ensuring a minimum of 150 lux.

Blue Spectrum Light (450-460nm, 20W): To stimulate melatonin production regulation and increase herd alertness and activity during dawn and dusk transitions.

Red Spectrum Light (620-630nm, 20W): To act as a biological stimulant, potentially encouraging milk yield and triggering oestrus cycles during the breeding and fattening periods, maintained at a low intensity of <10 lux.

2. Precision Layout & Implementation:
Based on our lighting simulation software and the client's lux requirements, we calculated the optimal number and placement of fixtures for one barn.

Main Barn Layout: 125 tubes installed in 5 rows running the 72-meter length of the barn.

Each row contains 25 × 1.2-meter T8 tubes.

The spectral sequence of the rows is: Blue - White - Red - Blue - White.

Side Shed Layout: 25 tubes of White light installed in a single row.

Total Fixtures per Barn: 150 T8 LED tubes.

3. Intelligent Control System:
The most innovative aspect of the solution was the integration of our programmable dimmer and timer controller. This system allows the client to:

Schedule On/Off Times: Automate the operation of each light spectrum based on the time of day to perfectly align with the cows' natural rhythm.

Adjust Light Intensity: Fine-tune the brightness of specific banks of lights (e.g., dimming the red lights to under 10 lux) to create the precise biological stimulus required.

Create a Simulated Natural Cycle: For example, the controller can be set to activate blue lights in the early morning, transition to full white light during the day, switch to red light in the evening, and ensure complete darkness at night.

Anticipated Results & Benefits

With this system in place, the client can expect:

Improved Herd Health & Welfare: A stable circadian rhythm reduces stress and promotes natural behavior.

Enhanced Productivity: The targeted use of blue and red spectra is designed to increase activity levels and support higher milk yield and reproductive efficiency.

Operational Efficiency: Automated lighting saves labor and ensures consistency, while the LED technology significantly reduces energy consumption and maintenance costs compared to traditional lighting.

Future-Proof Farming: The client now possesses a modern, data-driven tool to actively manage and optimize their livestock's environment.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates that modern agricultural lighting is no longer just about vision, but about vitality. By understanding the profound impact of light spectrum and timing on livestock, Benwei Lighting delivered a sophisticated, science-backed solution that turns a simple barn into an optimized environment for animal health and farm profitability. We are proud to partner with forward-thinking farmers in Slovakia and worldwide to illuminate the path to a more productive and sustainable agricultural future.
