How Much Light Do Indoor Plants Need?

There is no one response to this question since there are so many different plants. There are certain broad guidelines to remember, however.

Low-light houseplants: These plants thrive in north-facing windows or corners and are native to shaded or understory environments. They usually thrive in indirect light throughout the year with minimal need for direct sunshine. To survive, these plants need 10–15 watts, or 50–250 lumens per square foot. They consist of:

For indirect light, these plants thrive well in windows that face east or west. For optimum growth, they need 15-20 watts, or around 250–1,000 lumens per square foot.

medium-light plants consist of:

fiddle leaf figs from a rubber factory
fern, pepper, asparagus, and spider plants

Highlighting indoor plants: High-light plants thrive on south or southwest-facing windows because they perform so well in nature, where they grow in direct sunshine. To survive, they need more over 20 watts, or more than 1,000 lumens per square foot. Spectacular plants include:

Poinsettia succulent cactus plants
Jasmine orchid
Tangerine Hibiscus

Examine the needs of the plants you currently own or want to cultivate before purchasing grow lights. Find out the spectrum they like, the number of hours each day they need, and the light intensity they require. If your area lacks enough lighting, consider purchasing grow lights to make up the difference.

The Ideal Grow Lights for Flowering and Fruiting Plants
For blooming and fruiting, use a full-spectrum bulb with an adjustable red spectrum setting. The VITA Grow Bulb, which emits 1:4 blue to red light at 3000 Kelvin, is our favourite. Try the Aspect Hanging Grow Light for a comparable hanging alternative.

For seedlings and starts, the best grow lights
Any object that typically requires direct sunlight will need between 2,000 and 3,000 lumens of light, including seedlings. Choose bulbs with a complete spectrum or something that is tilted toward the blue end of the spectrum. To avoid leggy growth, hang the plant light of your choosing as near as you can to your planting tray. Because they won't heat up excessively and harm fragile shoots, LED lamps are a fantastic option.

The Best Indoor Tropical Plant Grow Lights
Full-spectrum bulbs with a balanced green and blue spectrum are necessary for standard tropical houseplants. At 20 to 25 watts per square foot, or around 500 lumens per square foot, the majority of indoor plants thrive. We like the adaptable Uplift planter's completely adjustable (and detachable) full-spectrum LED lighting.

The Finest Grow Lights for Growing Herbs Indoors
To grow successfully, most plants need full light. Even while some individuals may be fortunate enough to have south-facing windows, adding more light nearly always encourages herb development, resulting in plants with shorter legs and more productive plants. Select a full-spectrum bulb with a brightness rating of above 1000 per square foot.

The wall-mounted Smart Grow frame is our preferred indoor herb growing system. It has a 1480 lumen, 4000 Kelvin full spectrum LED included. Or, if you want to cultivate edibles all year long, think about getting a hydroponic grow cabinet.
