LED lighting in chicks
Does your breeding business implement an intermittent chick lighting program? As we well know, light is one of the main aspects that influence the well-being and performance of the bird. But it must be applied under certain criteria.
Prolonged exposure to lighting, without a period of rest or sleep, can cause abnormalities in the bird. Usually, problems related to growth and general well-being. For example, sudden death problem, leg twisting and if we are not careful in the intensity of lux can create a biting problem in animals.
In order to promote better health in your flock, a lighting program is essential.
Intermittent lighting program
In its first 15 days of life we must count at least 22 to 24 hours of light, after that we must let the chicken rest for at least 4 hours without light. This allows them to gain strength, adjust their temperature, feed themselves and drink drinking water freely.
However, as more chicks arrive and feed, flock activity can be erratic. This makes it difficult to easily assess the general behavior of the population. Through an intermittent lighting program, it promotes a pattern of activity in the chicks, with a space for sleep (rest of 4 hours per day).
In its first week of life, the most suitable duration for the chick is 20-23 hours of lighting. The ideal intensity should be between 20 and 40 lux. It is recommended to give at least one hour of darkness, in order to accustom the baby to a scotophase period (periodicity to perform its physiological functions).
This period of darkness or shade, according to reports, reduces chick mortality. It also improves the conversion of the bird into broilers.
According to research, decreasing the photoperiod can reduce the risk of metabolic problems. Cases such as disorders of the skeletal system, ascites or sudden death.
