Research on full spectrum led perception
From the perspective of LED manufacturers, it is necessary to know about human perception of LEDs. In order to consolidate the existing technology and gain new knowledge about the recently launched full spectrum led, which claims to introduce natural light quality into electrical lighting equipment, Fraunhofer Institute of building physics (Germany) conducted a study in cooperation with three major LED manufacturers Nichia (Japan), including Seoul semiconductor (South Korea), Toshiba materials (Japan) and led gear supplier lumitronix (Germany).
This work includes technical comparison of LED spectrum with sunlight spectrum and other lamps, literature review on the impact of spectrum on people, and a psychological study (design between subjects), which includes subjective scoring and performance testing of 83 people in the office. In the four lighting settings, each participant was tested for 1 hour, and the full spectrum led was compared with the conventional LED, covering visual comfort, naturalness, concentration, general glare level, sleepiness, alertness and gloss.

Main findings
1. Among the 19 comparisons in this study, the results of 6 were statistically significant. Full spectrum LEDs bring better results than standard LEDs (for example, higher naturalness, higher comfort level). However, the performance test (note, gloss, card sorting, fabric sorting) did not find any short-term effects. For all the comparisons in this study, standard LEDs are superior to full spectrum LEDs.
2. In all led States, participants felt more awake and alert at the end of the test phase than at the beginning. However, no difference was found between the four LED settings.
3. Technical comparison shows that high-quality sunlight spectrum is unbearable for architectural lighting applications due to the complexity and cost to date. On the contrary, today, full spectrum LEDs can provide unparalleled color rendering for different color temperatures. Unlike before, this provides artificial lighting solutions with the possibility to imitate sunlight. The new rating method (such as tm-30-15) helps to better understand the quality of the spectrum, and the supplier should establish this method so that professionals and non professionals can determine and specify lighting standards.
4. The literature review shows that so far, there are few studies on the impact of full spectrum led on people's perception, while there are many psychological studies on the impact of natural light and artificial light.
