The application of laser and LED in medical treatment
Monochromatic light of a specific wavelength has the ability to affect the biological behavior of cells without obvious damage. Laser has been used as the illumination source for a long time. However, due to its large size and high price, it can only emit a small spot and cannot illuminate a large area of wound. At the same time, in addition to expensive tunable lasers, general lasers have limited wavelength values. Therefore, the optimal wavelength of the irradiated light cannot be achieved, and the laser is a light source with very low energy efficiency. These problems restrict the application of laser in medical treatment.
Compared with lasers, LED light sources are small in size, relatively inexpensive, and have a variety of spectrums. Therefore, multiple LEDs can be used in arrays to be used in large-area wound irradiation. At the same time, light therapy can be achieved by selecting LEDs of different wavelengths. The optimal wavelength, coupled with the light efficiency of the LED, makes the LED have great application potential in phototherapy. The application of LEDs in healthcare and rehabilitation is also based on the same principle. In the above LED medical applications, there is also a problem of LED lighting optimization, that is, for a certain type of treatment, which type of spectrum is most suitable? What intensity, what kind of irradiation method, such as pulse method or steady-state method, is the most suitable? What is the best irradiation cycle? These are all worthy of scientific research, and they are all broadly defined lighting disciplines.
