Wide application of LED in agriculture

In the past 10 years, the area of facility horticulture in China has developed rapidly, and the environmental control technology of plant growth has attracted attention. Facility horticulture light irradiation technology is mainly used in two aspects: as supplementary irradiation for plant photosynthesis when the amount of sunshine is low or the sunshine time is short; as irradiation for plant photoperiod and light morphology. LED has significant advantages in both aspects.

Compared with other light sources such as cool white fluorescent lamps, high-pressure sodium lamps and metal halide lamps, LEDs are more effective in converting light energy into photosynthetically effective radiation; in addition, it has the characteristics of long life, small size, light weight and solid state. Therefore, in recent years, LEDs have received much attention in ground and space plant cultivation.


  In traditional agricultural production, ordinary electric light sources are generally used to supplement light and cover white light sources with colored plastic films to change the environment to regulate the growth and development of plants in facility cultivation. However, these measures have problems of varying degrees, such as lack of analysis of specific spectral components, resulting in impure light quality processing, inconsistent light intensity, close to or even lower than the light compensation point of plants, and low energy efficiency of the illumination light source. LEDs can solve these problems and are particularly suitable for artificial light-controlled plant cultivation.

   In the 2011 Taipei Optoelectronics Show, in addition to general lighting applications, plant lighting attracted the most attention. Following the establishment of the plant factory by Philips, a major international manufacturer, Osram has also invested in led plant lighting. China’s 12th Five-Year Plan lists plant factories as a key project. Japan will also set up 100 plant factories after the earthquake, as LEDs.   Different wavebands have different effects on plant growth. If you want to increase plant photosynthesis, you can increase the proportion of blue light, while promoting seed germination or regulating flowering can be controlled by blending; the growth of plant stems can be irradiated with ultraviolet light. Because LED light is different from sunlight and traditional full spectrum, it belongs to a single spectrum. Therefore, the use of LEDs has an absolute advantage in the special purpose of plant lighting, attracting investment from major domestic and foreign manufacturers.


Take the large manufacturer Osram as an example. In 2011, the light source designed for LED plant lighting was exhibited for the first time at the Taipei Optoelectronics Show. The design was designed with a wavelength of 656nm plus 455nm blue light and 6500K white light. As a world LED and agriculture, Osram I thought it would exhibit its latest products in plant lighting at the first stop, hoping to grab the Asian LED plant lighting pie.


Hongkai Industrial is exhibiting a 50W LED plant growth light composed of 32 high-power (650~670nm) and 4 high-power blue light (450~460nm). The net weight is about 3 kg and can reach IP66 level. It can be applied. It is used in hydroponic agriculture, gardening design, greenhouse lighting and home-style sunless cultivation, etc.


  Technology not only exhibited 35W and 70W plant photos, but also made LED plant lighting into a G19 bulb type, hoping to grab the general household market. This product is currently exported to Japan, creating a dazzling result.
