A Guide To Direct-Wiring Double-Ended T8 LED Tubes

A Guide to Direct-Wiring Double-Ended T8 LED Tubes

Replacing traditional fluorescent lighting with double-ended T8 LED tubes is an effective way to improve energy efficiency and light quality. Unlike "plug-and-play" versions, direct-wire (or ballast-bypass) models require a permanent modification to the existing light fixture. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step overview of the process.

Important Preliminary Considerations

Before starting any work, it is crucial to understand the following:

Safety First: Always ensure the mains power supply to the light fixture is switched off at the circuit breaker before beginning any work.

Tube Type: Confirm you have direct-wire or ballast-bypass double-ended LED tubes. These are not compatible with existing fluorescent ballasts.

Tombstones: Double-ended LED tubes require non-shunted tombstones (the sockets that hold the tube ends). Shunted tombstones, common in rapid-start fluorescent fixtures, provide a single electrical path across both contacts. Non-shunted tombstones provide two separate, independent paths. Most direct-wire installations will require you to replace shunted tombstones with non-shunted versions.

Professional Advice: If you are unsure about any part of this process or lack experience with electrical work, it is highly recommended to consult a qualified electrician.

Overview: Direct-Wire vs. Fluorescent Operation

In a standard fluorescent fixture, power flows through a ballast that regulates the current to the tubes. In a direct-wire LED installation, you will remove this ballast and supply line voltage directly to the tube sockets.

A key difference with double-ended tubes is how they receive power:

Single-Ended Tubes: Receive both line (hot) and neutral connections from the same end.

Double-Ended Tubes: Receive the line (hot) connection on one end and the neutral connection on the other.

Installation Guide

Step 1: Prepare the Fixture & Identify Components

Turn off the power at the circuit breaker and verify it is off.

Remove the old fluorescent tubes and the fixture's cover to access the internal wiring.

Identify the ballast, the tombstones, and the mains supply wires (typically Black for Line and White for Neutral).

Step 2: Remove the Old Ballast

Using wire cutters, carefully cut the wires connecting the ballast to the tombstones and the mains power. Cut the wires as close to the ballast as possible.

Remove the ballast from the fixture. You may need to unscrew it from its mounting bracket.

Important: Discard the old ballast according to your local regulations for electronic waste.

Step 3: Verify or Replace Tombstones

Check that all tombstones are non-shunted. If they are shunted, you must replace them with non-shunted versions.

To install a new tombstone, thread the wires from the fixture through the tombstone's base, connect them to the tombstone's terminals, and secure the tombstone in place.

Step 4: Make the Electrical Connections

The wiring method depends on whether you are installing a single tube or multiple tubes in one fixture.

For a Single T8 LED Tube:

This requires a simple series connection within the fixture.

Connect the Line (Black) wire from the mains supply to one of the pins on the tombstone at one end of the fixture.

Connect the Neutral (White) wire from the mains supply to one of the pins on the tombstone at the opposite end of the fixture.

Ensure all connections are secure using wire nuts or push-in connectors.

For Multiple T8 LED Tubes:

Multiple tubes must be connected in parallel. This ensures that if one tube fails, the others will continue to operate. There are two common methods:

Multi-Chain Method:

Run individual pairs of Line and Neutral wires from the main supply connection point to each set of tombstones. This is a very reliable method but may use more wire.

Daisy-Chain Method:

This is a more efficient wiring technique.

Supply the Line wire to the first tombstone on one side of the fixture. Then, use a short jumper wire to connect from the second contact on that same tombstone to the first contact on the next tombstone, and so on.

Repeat this process for the Neutral wire on the opposite side of the fixture.

Crucial Safety Note: Throughout the process, ensure that Line and Neutral wires never touch each other, as this will cause a short circuit.

Step 5: Final Checks and Testing

Once all connections are secure and insulated, carefully tuck the wires into the fixture to ensure they do not interfere with the tubes.

Reinstall the fixture cover.

Install the new double-ended T8 LED tubes by inserting them into the tombstones and giving them a quarter-turn to lock them in place.

Restore power at the circuit breaker.

Switch on the fixture. The LED tubes should illuminate instantly without flickering or buzzing, indicating a successful installation.

By following these steps, you can successfully convert your fluorescent light fixtures to modern, energy-efficient LED lighting. For further information or specific product queries, please consult the manufacturer's guidelines or contact a lighting professional.
