COB Connectors

COB LEDs can either be mounted directly to a heat sink and powered by discrete wires, or they can be attached to a heat sink using a COB connector (holder), which provides a solderless electrical connection to the LED and poke-in wire termination. In direct attachment systems, a thermal interface material (TIM) must be used between the COB substrate and heat sink. By completely filling interfacial air gaps and voids, the TIM makes sure that the thermal impedance between the LED and heat sink is kept to a minimum. The secondary optic may be more easily aligned with the LES with the use of a COB connector, which also makes construction simpler. In order to facilitate the interchange of COB modules and COB holders made by various manufacturers, the Zhaga Consortium has standardized a family of COB form factors.
