Innovative Glass-Based LEDs for Plant Growth
Introduction
With the growing demand for sustainable agricultural practices, indoor farming and greenhouse cultivation have gained significant attention. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have emerged as a promising artificial light source for plant growth due to their energy efficiency and spectral tunability. However, conventional plant growth LEDs often suffer from low spectral matching with plant pigments and insufficient light extraction efficiency. This article explores the design, performance, and application of glass-based LEDs with gradient refractive index (GRIN) structures, which address these limitations effectively.
Technical Innovations
Traditional LED encapsulation methods, such as phosphor-silicone mixing, often lead to poor thermal stability and low light output. To overcome these challenges, researchers have developed phosphor-in-glass (PIG) films with gradient refractive index structures. These GRIN-PIG films enhance light extraction efficiency by minimizing Fresnel reflection and total internal reflection at material interfaces.
Key Findings
Red LEDs with Mn⁴⁺-Doped PIG

Using Monte Carlo simulations, the optimal thickness and phosphor concentration for red LEDs were determined to be 0.15 mm and 0.6 g/cm³, respectively.
The fabricated Mn⁴⁺-doped phosphate glass-based LED exhibited an emission peak at 692 nm, aligning perfectly with the absorption spectra of phytochromes PR and PFR.
The luminous efficiency reached 96.74 lm/W, significantly higher than that of traditional silicone-encapsulated LEDs (59 lm/W) [Page 26, Table 2.1].
Blue LEDs with Eu²⁺-Doped PIG
For blue LEDs, the optimal parameters were a thickness of 0.15 mm and a phosphor concentration of 0.5 g/cm³.
The Eu²⁺-doped fluorophosphate glass-based LED emitted at 451 nm, matching the absorption peaks of chlorophyll a, b, and β-carotene.
The luminous efficiency achieved was 69.85 lm/W, demonstrating superior performance for blue light supplementation [Page 35].
Smart Dimming System
A microcontroller-based intelligent dimming system was developed using the fabricated red and blue LEDs.
The system includes a GY-30 light sensor, STC89C52 MCU, and PWM-driven LED modules, enabling real-time adjustment of light intensity based on environmental conditions.
This system reduces energy consumption by up to 40% compared to traditional static lighting methods [Page 45, Fig. 4.12].
Advantages of GRIN-PIG LEDs
High Spectral Matching: The emission spectra of GRIN-PIG LEDs align closely with the absorption profiles of key plant pigments, promoting photosynthesis and growth.
Enhanced Efficiency: The gradient refractive index structure minimizes photon loss, resulting in higher luminous efficiency.
Thermal Stability: Glass-based encapsulation ensures long-term reliability under high-temperature conditions.
Energy Savings: The smart dimming system optimizes light usage, reducing unnecessary energy consumption.
Applications

These advanced LEDs are ideal for:
Vertical farms and greenhouses
Research laboratories studying plant physiology
Urban farming systems requiring precise light control
The integration of GRIN-PIG technology with smart control systems represents a significant advancement in plant growth lighting. By improving spectral matching and energy efficiency, these LEDs offer a sustainable solution for modern agricultural needs. Future work may focus on expanding the database of light recipes for specific plant species and growth stages.
