Japan's LED lighting consumption soars by 200%

Japan's LED lighting consumption soars by 200%

After the Fukushima earthquake in March 2011, many areas in eastern Japan have not yet restored power supply.

The Japanese government has begun to implement the "Ecological Points" plan, as well as the establishment and implementation of the Green Procurement Law and the Electrical Appliances Safety Law. Among these policies, including energy-saving incentive policies for lighting facilities, for areas that use LED lighting, according to their energy-saving degree, further reduce the price of electricity.

On May 5, 2012, Unit 3 of the Hokkaido Electric Power Company Park Nuclear Power Plant shut down. So far, all nuclear power plants in operation in Japan have been shut down. Prior to this, 30% of Japan's electricity relied on nuclear power, and the shutdown of nuclear power units further exacerbated Japan's electricity shortage. "Therefore, there has been a system of power-off rotation in various parts of Japan. Once the power is cut off, even the traffic lights on the road will be stopped." Ni Zhengdian said.

Although this plan started before the Great Earthquake in Japan, its promotion still played an important role in energy conservation in Japan after the war. In 2011, the sales volume of LED lighting in Japan increased by 268% over the previous year, and in 2012 it is expected to increase by 185% on this basis. Nizhengdian pointed out that the sales of LED lighting products accounted for about 20% of the sales of all lighting products in 2011, and this proportion is expected to reach 42% this year.

The new international standard should be able to clarify the standard parameters of the lighting performance of LED products, such as luminous flux, color temperature, service life, etc., and provide consumers with clear and easy-to-understand instructions for distinguishing various LED products.

In order to further promote the use of LED lighting, Ni Zhengdian also proposed to formulate industry international standards for LED lighting.

According to the comparison test of 12 kinds of LED lighting products on the Japanese market by the Japan Lighting Industry Association, when the same product uses the US Department of Energy LED performance standards and the Japan Lighting Industry Association LED performance standards, the difference between the two can be as much as 50 %. "Therefore, it is very necessary to formulate universal international testing standards." Ni Zhengdian pointed out.
