LED floodlights - everything you need to know

Over the past few years, floodlights have come a long way with LED technology. When LEDs were first introduced, they were very useful and good for reducing brightness, and products like globes or LED strips made this possible. This is because they are not as efficient as they are now. If the manufacturer cranks up the brightness of the LEDs, they'll just burn out. I know firsthand that manufacturers lost a lot of money in the early development of testing LED floodlights because they would burn out within a year. Rest assured, they now perform better and last longer.

LED Chips - As discussed earlier with LED chips, I can easily say that SMD LED floodlights have a much longer lifespan than COB LED floodlights. The difference is that SMDs use many small LED chips instead of one big LED chip, as shown in the image below, running SMD chips means they can run at a much lower temperature, which avoids burning out LED floodlights.

Wattage - It's very important to get the right application brightness and coverage. Every floodlight is different, and some operate more efficiently. For most LED products, you should use lumens instead of watts. LED floodlights can jump a lot per watt, so they pretty much all do the same job.

Beam Angle - Now this is just something you need to consider as almost all LED floodlights have a wide beam angle of 180°. We have had a number of clients who say the floodlights are much brighter than expected and brighten up neighbors' backyards that may not be needed. Try installing the floodlight in the center of the building, or use two smaller LED floodlights on either side. The higher the LED floodlight is installed, the larger the beam angle.

Sensor LED Floodlights - Almost every LED floodlight model now comes with the option to include a sensor, or connect an external sensor to the floodlight. Having a sensor LED floodlight is a great option as it saves power and also allows you to change the sensitivity and time the floodlight stays on. Another sensor LED floodlight option is to use a dusk-to-dawn sensor, so that the light only comes on when it's dark and turns off at sunrise.

IP Rating - Always look for the lowest IP54 LED floodlights, the best is a higher IP rating of 65 to keep water and dust out of the fittings. Because LED floodlights are built in, you will need to replace the entire light once they go out, so make sure you get a high IP rating.

Brand - It's important to buy lighting from a quality brand, and as discussed in the last point about LED integration, you want to make sure that what you're buying is built to last. Floodlights can vary widely in price and quality, and it's easy to get confused.

Color Temperature - This is an important consideration as it can change the application significantly. If you want your application to be as crisp and bright as possible, choose around 5500k Kelvin, which will give off a pure bright white. This LED floodlight temperature is suitable for parking lots, sports fields or work environments. If you want your application to be warmer then go for 4000k which will give off a natural light color suitable for almost any application. If you want more mood and vibe in your area then go for 3000k warm white which will give off a relaxed look.

LED floodlights are a practical solution that casts a lot of light with good coverage. Most LED floodlights include a DIY plug so you can actually install it. Almost all LED floodlights also include an arm mount so you can point in the desired direction. If you want to extend further to highlight, you can extend the arm like below.
