MR16 & GU10 bulb and socket types

In downlight and spot lighting applications, the MR16 (GU5.3) and GU10 bulbs are frequently seen in residential and commercial settings respectively. Accent lighting and product highlighting typically require more narrow beam angles of less than 45 degrees, which are typically employed in retail lighting applications. Due to the relatively small diameter of these bulbs, they are also commonly referred to as PAR16 or PAR20 bulbs. However, PAR20 bulbs normally come with a screw socket designed in the Edison style.

In the ceiling downlights of the majority of newly constructed residential properties in Australia, dichroic halogen light bulbs of either a 12V 50W MR16 or 240V GU10 50W wattage will be used. Our LED MR16 and GU10 bulbs are a suitable replacement since they reduce the amount of heat produced by up to 80% and save between 75% and 90% of the electricity that would have been used by the previous bulbs, depending on the arrangement. This results in a decrease in the amount of electricity needed to run your lights by as much as one tenth of the typical amount, as well as a decrease in the amount of electricity needed to run your air conditioner by as much as thirty percent due to the reduction in temperature.

The MR16 and GU10 light bulb types can be distinguished from one another due to the different sockets that they use. The most important distinction between the two is that the MR16 light bulb needs an electronic transformer that operates at a low voltage of 12V, whereas the GU10 light bulb simply plugs into a mains power 240V AC socket and does not need an additional transformer. When using a 12V MR16 light globe socket, it is physically impossible to receive an electric shock. However, when using a GU10 socket, it is theoretically possible to receive an electric shock by inserting a metal object into one of the small cavities in the socket; however, this scenario is extremely unlikely to occur.

The LED chip design that is included in MR16 and GU10 light bulbs is same. This design may comprise an earlier independent multi LED format, a newer merged multi LED format, or a chip on board (COB) kind. Even if some of these are still made due to cost savings or just the usage of older technology that suits some smaller LED kinds, the independent multi-LED format is more uncommon to see in today's more compact light designs. However, this does not mean that it is impossible to find.

In contrast to the multi-LED sources or first generation MR16 LEDs, which create a fuzzier outline due to the presence of multiple sources, typically 4 or 5 LEDs, the push for a single LED source or COB LED has been aimed at replicating a small source or point source in order to create a single shadow with a crisp outline. This is in contrast to the goal of the push to create a single shadow with a crisp outline. Although the single point source more nearly replicates the conventional dichroic halogen, using either one is not a disadvantage in the majority of applications.

The majority of 50W electronic halogen 12VAC downlight transformers can be used with MR16 LED light bulbs, which are compatible with those transformers. You may either check the list that is connected to each type of MR16 LED light bulb that we sell or you can mail us your electrical transformer and we will test it for you. As was said in the section titled "LED light bulb – Driver and Power Supplies," you can replace your halogen downlight transformer with a constant voltage 12V DC LED transformer or driver to conserve further electricity and extend the life of your LED lighting system. This can be done by following the instructions found in the section titled "LED light bulb – Driver and Power Supplies." The second option is the one that we advocate most strongly for commercial applications, as well as for those situations in which the LED light bulb will be subjected to extended operating hours or harsh temperatures. Aside from that, the GU10 LED light bulb type is acceptable for use in most residential settings and is typically the option that offers the best value.

Also, if you want to replace your old 50W halogen downlight transformers, you are required by law to hire a licenced electrician. The only exception to this rule is if the transformers have a plug in mains socket in the ceiling space. In this case, you can simply unplug the light and buy an LED driver that already has a mains plug attached to it.

On the other hand, the MR16 LED bulb only requires a push-in fit, whereas the GU10 bulb requires both a push-in fit and a twist fit, very similarly to the ordinary B22 light bulb. Only in situations where there is work to be done on the building's mains wiring is it necessary to hire a qualified electrician, which is something that the vast majority of people are aware of.

The one other thing to keep in mind is to check and see if the space available in your existing downlight fitting is limited. Some MR16 and GU10 LED light bulbs have a length that is substantially longer than usual in order to enhance the size of the heat sink. As a result, these bulbs do not fit in some downlight fixtures because of their size. In such situations, you have the option of selecting a shorter MR16/GU10 LED light bulb or purchasing one of our appropriate fixtures along with your MR16/GU10 LED light bulb order.
