What is wildlife-friendly lighting?
The Wildlife Lighting Program, established by the Department of the Interior's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, aims to mitigate light pollution in ecologically sensitive regions while maintaining safety and security for people.
As an eco-friendly LED lighting company, Benwei Lighting is deeply committed to preserving natural landscapes and protecting wildlife. Our certified wildlife lighting products are designed to reduce one of the most significant ecological threats to turtles and other coastal species: light pollution. Benwei's LED tapes use amber light with wavelengths above 560nm, making the emitted light undetectable to many animal species. Conventional artificial lighting can severely disrupt ecosystems at multiple levels.
Reducing both directly visible light sources-such as coastal property lights, flashlights, and indoor lighting-and indirectly visible light, such as reflective glare and sky glow, is essential for the survival of numerous species. This effort begins with eliminating any non-essential decorative lighting. All remaining lighting should comply with guidelines developed by the state of Florida in collaboration with scientists and technical experts, aimed at minimizing the impact of artificial light on sea turtles.
KEEP IT LOW: Use fixtures with low mounting height, low wattage, and minimal lumens. Avoid floodlights, spotlights, and high-mounted pole lighting.
KEEP IT SHIELDED: Shield fixtures so you cannot see the source of light. Shielding also helps direct the light down to the ground where it is needed.
KEEP IT LONG– Sea turtles are less disturbed by the long wavelengths of light (560 nanometers or longer).
