Comparing Lumens and Watts
How lumens compare to the wattage rating, which we are all accustomed to seeing on incandescent bulb packaging, is one of the most often asked questions by customers concerning LED lighting. Lumens and watts measure several things, which is why this idea is so difficult to understand. Watts represent the electricity utilized by the bulb, whereas lumens measure the total amount of light the bulb emits. Lumens, not Watts, are used to measure brightness in light bulbs.
Calculating Light Production
An incandescent bulb's brightness may be easily estimated; the higher the wattage rating, the more light it emits. We are all aware of how much brighter a 100W light is than a 40W bulb. It's difficult to use wattage numbers nowadays to determine how bright a light bulb will be because there are so many different types of light bulbs available. Although CFLs, halogens, and LEDs are all more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs, their efficiency vary. Lumens, as opposed to watts, which just tell you how much energy the bulb uses, are a more accurate measure of light. The amount of light emitted by the bulb increases with its lumen value, although a high lumen value does not always indicate a high wattage requirement.
Comparing Watts And Lumens
Look at the packaging of LED bulbs and compare them to other types of light bulbs. Both the wattage of the bulb and the amount of lumens produced are displayed. To determine whether the lightbulbs will produce an equivalent quantity of light, compare their lumen ratings. Next, compare their wattage requirements to see how much power each bulb would consume. You can simply determine a light's brightness and energy consumption using these two numbers. Find bulbs with the required light output, then select the one with the lowest wattage to get the most energy-efficient bulb for your needs.
Measuring the LED light's brightness
Use these approximations until you feel more at ease using lumens to estimate the amount of light a bulb will emit:
40W equals 450 lumens
800 lumens using 60W
1100 lumens using 75W
1600 lumens at 100 watts
2600 lumens at 150 watts
Using the estimates from above, you should select LED bulbs with 800 lumens if you want to replace 60W lights with LED bulbs that emit comparable brightness.
