Do LED Lights Produce UV?

Do LED Lights Produce UV?

Do LED light bulbs produce ultraviolet light? How practical are black lights made using LEDs? Do tanning beds have lights that use LED technology? As the use of LED light bulbs becomes more widespread, an increasing number of people are curious about the performance of this cutting-edge technology in a variety of contexts.

The implementation of LEDs in black light technology is a piece of cake. LEDs have the potential to emit light of any wavelength if so programmed. The majority of black light LED sources are in the 385-400 nm range; however, some experts believe that a bit lower is the perfect range for producing the best possible black light effect. The full black light spectrum can be illuminated by a fixture or bulb with a peak wavelength of around 365 nm.

Some individuals working in the lighting industry have expressed their belief that LEDs do not generate UV radiation. However, research has found that even conventional LEDs emit a trace amount of ultraviolet radiation. Having said that, the amount of UV radiation that they really emit is quite low. This occurs because an LED lamp has phosphors, which are responsible for converting the ultraviolet light into white light.

We are all aware that sunburn is the result of being exposed to ultraviolet radiation, which, in more severe cases, can result in eye difficulties, skin cancer, a weakened immune system, and other health issues. Fortunately, the vast majority of man-made sources of light do not give off sufficient amounts of UV radiation for this to be a significant concern. Already a source of concern due to the amount of mercury that is contained in them, CFL lamps are now also being investigated for the amount of UV radiation that they emit. CFLs do not create a considerable quantity of ultraviolet radiation, but certain persons who are extremely sensitive to the effects of ultraviolet radiation may still be impacted by the small amount of ultraviolet radiation that they do produce. People should preserve at least 30 centimetres of space between themselves and any source of light, as recommended by Health Canada.

The fading of colours is another issue that can be caused by UV radiation. Because of their UV emissions, CFL and HID bulbs are known to be responsible for damaging shades, carpets, and painted surfaces, among other things. This has been another driving force behind the transition to LED lighting in establishments such as museums.

What about bothersome insects, particularly those that are drawn to particular lights? It's possible that you didn't notice this as much with LED. UV radiation that is emitted by light sources has been shown to attract a wide variety of insects; however, the emissions that are produced by LEDs are so low that they do not have the same amount of influence over insects. This is useful in a variety of contexts, including food service and outdoor applications, to name just two examples.

It should come as no surprise that LED tanning lights are not available in the United States given the low UV output of LEDs. It's not so much that it can't be done; rather, the challenge is making them efficient, having a long life, and being affordable all at the same time. Will commercial LED tanning beds become available at some point? If you do a quick search on Alibaba, you will be able to find several different LED tanning beds; but, the prices (and perhaps the quality) of these products leave something to be desired. But you should never rule out the possibility of LED; just a few years ago, it would have been impossible to fathom some of the things LED can achieve now.
