Effects of Light Quality Ratio on Rice Growth and Application of Infrared Lamps in Calf Feeding
Compared to natural light, the LED light quality ratio in the plant factory showed a significant growth-promoting effect on rice during both the basic nutrient stage and the photoperiod-sensitive stage. Significant differences existed between different light quality ratio treatments; high red light, while promoting plant height and leaf length, also carried a risk of lodging; a high blue light ratio significantly inhibited vegetative growth such as plant height and tillering. Furthermore, the light quality treatment combination that shortened the growth period was the most effective in the study. However, principal component analysis showed that it achieved the highest overall yield score in both japonica and indica rice varieties, and it achieved a synergistic yield increase while shortening the entire rice growth period. Considering varietal suitability, growth period, seed yield, and energy consumption, the light quality ratio can serve as a general light environment scheme for rapid breeding of rice in LED plant factories.
Calf feeding and management are closely related to herd production performance, and proper calf management directly affects the economic benefits of the cattle farm. Calves under 6 months of age are called calves. At this stage, calves are in a period of rapid growth and development and have relatively high temperature requirements. Studies by Xia Chunfang et al. have found that calves have low body fat reserves at birth, and if the ambient temperature in the livestock shed is too low, it can hinder their growth and development, causing physiological stress. The ideal temperature for calves is generally between 15 and 25°C. Excessively high ambient temperatures can lead to discomfort and dehydration in calves; excessively low temperatures can cause diarrhea and colds and, in severe cases, affect their growth and development. Studies by Liu Wei et al. have shown that piglets using underfloor heating gain weight faster, with an average daily weight gain increase of 44 head. Studies by Li Luqin et al. have shown that installing heating equipment can keep the ground dry, reducing the incidence of diseases such as dysentery and diarrhea in livestock and poultry.
Therefore, suitable temperature conditions are an important factor in ensuring the healthy growth of calves. Infrared lamps have functions such as intelligent heating, cold dispelling, dehumidification, and disinfection, and their wavelengths are typically between 700 and 1000 nm. Infrared lamps can directly act on the surface of animals during heating, without requiring enclosed and insulated pens. This means that infrared lamps can selectively target areas that need heating, thereby reducing the rate of diarrhea in calves and minimizing energy waste. Heating with a "bath heater" lamp is similar to traditional heating systems, requiring heating the entire space to provide heat, thus necessitating enclosed pens. The wavelength of a "bath heater" lamp is between 400 and 700 nm, primarily relying on the white light emitted by the bulb and the radiant heat. Although "bath heater" lamps also have an infrared effect, they generate more heat and are more efficient, better meeting the heating needs of calves. Therefore, when raising cattle, infrared lamps can be used for supplemental heating and to increase illumination.
