Are you tired of constantly replacing burnt out fluorescent tubes? Are you looking to make the switch to energy-efficient LED lighting but unsure how to do it? One obstacle to installing LED tubes in a fluorescent fixture is the ballast. A ballast regulates the current that flows to the bulb and is necessary for fluorescent bulbs to function. However, LED tubes do not need a ballast to operate, so it's best to bypass the ballast altogether. Here's how to do it.
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Before starting any electrical work, always turn off the power at the circuit breaker box. It's also a good idea to use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is truly off.
Step 2: Remove the Fluorescent Tube and Starter
Carefully remove the fluorescent tube and starter from the fixture and set them aside.
Step 3: Identify the Wiring
Take note of the wires and how they are connected to the ballast. There may be four or more wires, depending on the ballast type. The black and white wires are the power supply wires, while the other wires are for the ballast.
Step 4: Cut the Wires
Using wire cutters, cut all the wires that are connected to the ballast. Make sure to leave at least 6 inches of wire from the ballast for future use.
Step 5: Strip the Wires
Strip the insulation from the wires you just cut and separate the wires from each other. Strip the insulation from the black and white wires as well.
Step 6: Connect the Wires
Connect the black wire from the power supply to the black wire from the LED tube, and the white wire from the power supply to the white wire from the LED tube. Use wire nuts to secure each connection and wrap each connection with electrical tape.
Step 7: Insert the LED Tube
Insert the LED tube into the fixture and secure it in place with the clips or screws that held the old fluorescent tube. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the LED tube.
Step 8: Turn On the Power
Turn on the power at the circuit breaker box and test the LED tube to make sure it's working properly.
Congratulations! You have successfully bypassed the ballast to install LED tubes in your fluorescent fixture. Not only will LED lighting save you money in energy costs, but it will also last longer, and you won't have to worry about replacing ballasts or fluorescent tubes anymore.
