How to increase strawberry yield using LED plant lights?

 

Strawberry cultivation in home environments often faces light adversity: Urban high-rise buildings typically provide less than 6 hours of natural sunlight each day, which is insufficient; they also lack important light colors such as red light (600–700 nm) and blue light (400–500 nm), resulting in poor light quality. Additionally, indoor light is only 10%–30% as strong as outdoor light, leading to weak light intensity that can cause issues like excessive leafy growth, delays in flower development, and lower sugar levels in the fruit. Insufficient light in home strawberry cultivation can cause yield losses of 40%–60%, becoming a core bottleneck for its widespread adoption.

Light, as the energy source for plant photosynthesis, plays a crucial role in regulating strawberry growth and development through its quality, intensity, and photoperiod. Red light helps strawberries grow taller and produce sugars by activating phytochrome A (PhyA), while blue light controls how the plant breathes and develops its chloroplasts through cryptochrome. Studies have shown that the photosynthetic efficiency of strawberries under red-blue combined light is 20%–35% higher than that under single light quality, and the vitamin C content of the fruit increases by 15%–25%.

 

Currently, most commercially available LED plant lights are full-spectrum white light, which has problems such as a single spectrum, fixed light quality, and unadjustable light intensity and cannot meet the dynamic changes in light requirements of strawberries at different growth stages . During the seedling stage, strawberries need blue light to promote root development, and during the flowering stage, they need red light to induce flower bud differentiation, but existing products make it difficult to achieve precise control in different stages.

By carefully studying how different LED light settings affect strawberry growth, the best lighting plan for home use was found: using a mix of red and blue light (equal amounts), with a brightness of 15,000 lx, and shining the light for 12 hours each day. This scheme significantly improves strawberry net photosynthetic rate by 83.8%, chlorophyll content by 35.4%, and yield by 244.2%. Soluble sugars in the fruit increase by 41.5% and vitamin C by 32.3%, and quality is effectively improved. Compared to single-quality light or white light, the red-blue combined light achieves a balanced optimization of photosynthetic efficiency and growth through the synergistic effect of photoreceptors, with a daily energy consumption of less than 0.4 kWh, combining high efficiency and economy.
