What Are "COB" LEDs and Why Do They Matter?
The acronym "COB" stands for chip-on-board LEDs.
The term "Chip-on-Board" (often abbreviated as "COB") describes the process of producing LED arrays by mounting a bare LED chip in direct contact with a substrate (such silicon carbide or sapphire, for example). When compared to more traditional LED technologies, such as Surface Mounted Device ("SMD") LEDs and Dual In-line Package ("DIP") LEDs, Chip-on-Board (COB) LEDs offer a variety of benefits. First and foremost, COB technology enables a much increased packing density of the LED array, also known as an improved "lumen density" by those who work in the lighting industry. If we compare COB LED technology to DIP LED technology and SMD LED technology, we can see that COB LED technology results in 38 times more LEDs when applied to a 10mm x 10mm square array, whereas SMD LED technology results in 8.5 times more LEDs. As a consequence, the light produced is of a higher intensity and more uniformly distributed. Alternately, by utilising COB LED technology, it is possible to significantly lower the footprint as well as the energy consumption of the LED array while maintaining the same level of light production. For instance, as comparison to an SMD or DIP LED array with the same lumen output, a COB LED array with 500 lumens can be far more compact and use a great deal less power.
The fact that COB devices only have one circuit and two connections for the entire chip while having any number of diodes on them is yet another significant benefit of employing COB LED technology. The remainder of the LED device is simplified as a result of this single circuit design, which is independent of the number of diodes contained on the chip.
The following are some of the benefits that Chip-on-Board LED arrays offer:
Compactness as a result of the chip's diminutive size High-Intensity, particularly when operating at close ranges
High degree of uniformity, even while working at relatively close distances.
Design Simplicity, as there is only need for one circuit and two connections to be utilised Superior Thermal Performance, resulting in greater life, stability, and dependability
Why are COB LEDs such an essential component when using power from a battery?
When constructing a lighting system that is powered by a battery, there has always been a compromise that must be made between the amount of high-quality lumen output (also known as brightness) and the length of time that the system can run on battery power. Historically, the runtime of a battery would be shorter if it was wanted to have a higher quality of brightness (presuming that the same size battery was being used). On the other hand, thanks to the relatively recent introduction of COB LED technology, this trade-off no longer poses nearly as much of a problem. To our knowledge, this is the first time that COB LEDs with very little power have been able to provide exceedingly high-quality, ultra-bright light. As a consequence of this, a lithium-ion battery pack that is on the smaller and lighter side can provide power to a light system that is based on COB LEDs for very extended periods of time. In point of fact, if you use our incredibly compact and lightweight (1.25lbs), rechargeable Mobile Power Centre, our 6W COB LED Trade Show Light will remain operational for 14-15 hours. Only a few short years ago, it was simply not conceivable to use a battery of a relatively small size to produce high-quality light output for extended periods of time. Because of this, COB-based LED lights were the only viable option for us to consider when developing our extremely bright and extremely energy-efficient lighting systems.
In a nutshell, chip-on-board LEDs are the most recent and cutting-edge form of technology that can now be purchased. When compared to earlier LED technologies, which are used in the majority of other types of trade show lighting today, COB LEDs are, to put it succinctly, brighter, consume less power, and produce a higher quality beam of light. Insist on buying display lights equipped with COB LED technology the next time you are in the market for such products.
