What are Lumens?
At a certain distance from a light source, lumens provide an exact measurement of perceived light output. Lumens represent a bulb's actual brightness rather than the outdated Wattage system, which measures the power needed to illuminate a bulb. This is because Lumens are independent of the Wattage system (please see table below).
One Lumen: How Much Light Is It?
The apparent brightness of a single candle burning in an otherwise dark room within 0.5 meters is one lumen. However, setting two candles side by side to raise the Lumen count to two does not double the brightness; rather, it takes an increase of four times the original brightness for the light to seem twice as bright to the human eye. This means that many hundreds of Lumens are needed to adequately light a typical living space, hallway, bedroom, etc. (For more information on how many Lumens should be regarded adequate to light different sizes of rooms in a home, please see Calculating Lumens - "How many Lumens do I need per square foot?" below).
What number of lumens do I need per square foot?
In the end, preference will determine whether to calculate the necessary quantity of light output in terms of Lumens per square foot. For instance, some individuals could like considerably brighter living rooms than the recommended brightness of a corridor, while on the other hand, other people might want more illumination of entrances and stairs than of cozy nighttime quarters. The typical formula for determining the number of Lumens needed to illuminate a room in a house in relation to its square footage is shown below. These estimates are based on the presumptive usage of the room, which takes into account whether it will be utilized for relaxing or more practical duties (such cooking or ironing).
What number of lumens do I need for a lounge?
Assuming an 18 ft. × 12 ft. medium-sized lounge, the computation would be as follows: Lighting a typical lounge space requires (18 x 12) x 15 = 3,240 Lumens. We can see from the table below that three to four LED bulbs with individual Lumen ratings of 1,100 may provide this amount of light.
For a kitchen, how many lumens am I required?
For a 15 ft x 10 ft medium-sized kitchen, the computation would be as follows: To light a typical kitchen, 15, 10, 75, or 11,250 lumens are needed. According to the data below, about ten LED bulbs with individual Lumen ratings of 1,100 may be used to provide this amount of light.
I need to know how many lumens I need for a hallway.
The computation would be as follows, assuming a typical, small corridor of 5 feet by 12 feet: It takes 600 lumens to adequately illuminate a typical corridor (5 x 12) x 10. According to the table below, approximately two LED bulbs with individual Lumen ratings of 450 may provide this amount of light.
How many lumens is a bedroom supposed to have?
The estimate would be as follows, assuming a medium-sized bedroom that is 19 feet by 10 feet: It takes 2,850 lumens (or 19 × 10 x 15) to adequately illuminate a typical bedroom. According to the data below, about three LED bulbs with individual Lumen ratings of 1,100 may be used to provide this amount of light.
What kind of lighting do I need for a bathroom?
According to the following computation, a typical bathroom would be 6 feet by 8 feet in size: The quantity of lumens needed to illuminate a bathroom is (6 × 8) x 75 = 3,600. We can see from the table below that three to four LED bulbs with individual Lumen ratings of 1,100 may provide this amount of light.
