Colour and mosquito vision
Mosquitoes own compound eyes that are exquisitely tuned to near-UV and blue-violet (≈ 300–400 nm); those are the wavelengths chosen for electric bug traps.
Yellow light, sitting at 570–590 nm, simply does not register as interesting; the insects barely notice it.
Proposed (non-lethal) deterrent ideas
Low-attraction: because yellow does not lure mosquitoes, swapping white or blue bulbs for yellow should make the area less conspicuous.
Visual confusion: a strong yellow glow might scramble the shadows and contrast cues mosquitoes use to pinpoint hosts.
Where the Claims Fall Apart
Scent dominates vision: mosquitoes hunt chiefly by CO₂, sweat acids, body heat and personal odours; eyesight is only backup. A person exhaling and sweating under a yellow lamp is still a beacon.
Effect is weak; bites continue: field studies and reviews find "bug bulbs" produce no meaningful drop in landing rates. They may congregate a few fewer insects near the fitting, but they do not shield individuals.
It is not a repellent: DEET or picaridin blocks the insect's chemical receptors. Yellow light merely fails to attract-an entirely different, far weaker, mechanism.

What actually works
EPA-registered topical repellents with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus (PMD).
Physical barriers: intact window screens, bed nets, long sleeves and trousers.
Source reduction: empty or treat any container that holds standing water.
