What factors determine the lifespan of LED lights?

The service life of LED lights is affected by many factors. The following are the most core elements and their mechanisms of action:

1. LED chip quality

Materials and processes

The semiconductor materials (such as GaN, InGaN) and manufacturing processes of the chip directly affect the luminous efficiency and stability.

High-quality chips can reduce light decay (brightness decay) and color deviation, and the service life can reach more than 50,000 hours, while inferior chips may age significantly in 10,000-20,000 hours.

Light decay speed

LED life is usually defined as the time when the brightness drops to 70% of the initial value (L70 standard).

The speed of light decay depends on the heat resistance and current shock resistance of the chip.

2. LED power supply ( LED driver)

Current stability

LED is sensitive to current, and the driving power supply needs to provide constant current output. Current fluctuations or unstable voltage can cause the chip to overheat or burn.

Poor-quality power supplies are prone to high-frequency pulses or harmonics, which accelerate component aging.

Conversion efficiency

High-efficiency power supplies (≥90%) can reduce energy loss and heat generation and extend overall life.

Inefficient power supplies generate high heat, which may cause problems such as capacitor bulging and circuit board ablation.

3. Heat dissipation design

Thermal management structure

The junction temperature of LED chips is a core indicator. For every 10°C increase, the life span may be halved.

High-quality lamps quickly dissipate heat through aluminum substrates, heat sink fins, thermal grease, etc.

Ambient temperature

High temperature environments (such as enclosed lamps and outdoor in summer) will aggravate heat accumulation and accelerate light decay.

Recommended operating temperature: -20°C~40°C (special design is required if it exceeds the range).  BENWEI company can design -20°C~55°C high temperature LED lamp

4. Use environment and installation method

Humidity and dust

A humid environment can easily cause circuit short circuits or rust of metal parts (such as oxidation of lamp bead solder joints).

Dust accumulation will block the heat dissipation holes and form local high temperature areas.

Installation location

Enclosed lamps (such as downlights and ceiling lamps) need to reserve heat dissipation space to avoid being close to the ceiling or wall.

Outdoor lamps must have IP65 and above waterproof and dustproof ratings.

5. Usage habits

Switching frequency
Frequent switching (such as dozens of times a day) may shorten the life of the driver due to current shock, but the LED chip itself has a high resistance to switching times (usually up to 50,000 times or more).

Continuous working time

Long-term 24-hour uninterrupted use will accelerate light decay. It is recommended to use it no more than 12 hours a day.

Benwei company can produce Long-term 24-hour uninterrupted using LED lamp

6. Other factors

Packaging materials

If the epoxy resin or silicone package has poor weather resistance, it is easy to yellow and crack, causing the chip to be exposed and damaged.

Circuit design

Overvoltage/overcurrent protection and anti-static design (ESD) can prevent accidental voltage spikes from damaging the LED.

Brand and certification

Products that have passed LM-80 (light decay test), UL, and CE certifications are more reliable.

Practical suggestions for extending the life of LEDs
Choose high-quality brands: give priority to products from major manufacturers such as Philips, Osram, and CREE.

Focus on heat dissipation design: avoid using high-power LED lights in confined spaces.

Stable power supply environment: install a voltage stabilizer or UPS (especially in areas with large voltage fluctuations).

Regular cleaning and maintenance: remove dust from the surface of the lamp and check whether the heat dissipation components are normal.

Reasonable usage habits: reduce frequent switching and avoid long-term operation in high-temperature environments.

By optimizing the above factors, the actual life of LED lamps can approach or even exceed the nominal value (such as 50,000 hours ≈ 5.7 years, calculated based on 24 hours a day), which is significantly better than traditional incandescent lamps (about 1,000 hours) and energy-saving lamps (8,000 hours). if you need high quality ( Long-term 24-hour uninterrupted )  LED Lamp , you can visit http://www.benweilight.com
