What is the important difference between LED light tubes T5 and T8? How to choose the right LED light tube?
In interior design or installation, it is often heard that LED light tubes have different models, and T5 light tubes and T8 light tubes are the two most commonly heard models. What is the difference between T5 light tube and T8 light tube? How to choose the right model when carrying out the project? Let us explain the difference between T5 light tube and T8 light tube from the four aspects of size, luminosity, energy consumption and environmental protection!

The difference between T5 light tube and T8 light tube
1/ Dimensions of LED light tubes T5 and T8 respectively
We commonly use T8 and T5 light tubes, the "T" stands for "Tube", which means tubular, and the number after the T represents the diameter of the tube.
This means that each "T" is 1/8 of an inch, and one inch is equal to 25.4 mm. Then each "T" is 25.4 ÷ 8=3.175 mm, then the diameter of the T8 light tube is about 25.4mm, and the diameter of the T5 light tube is smaller, about 15.8mm.
When purchasing, we can choose the model according to the size of the lamps in the home. The larger size lamps can choose T8, and the smaller size lamps can choose T5. Before purchasing, it is best to record the size of the required lamps and then buy them. If you want to choose a T5 light tube, you can choose a T8 light tube, but you need a conversion bracket.
2/ The luminosity of LED light tubes T5 and T8 respectively
In terms of luminosity, compared with the two light tubes, the T8 light tube will be stronger in luminosity, because the T5 light tube is smaller in size, so less electrons and gas are filled, and the brightness generated when it is energized is also less. Therefore, the T8 tube should be brighter.
If you need a brighter light tube for purposes and places, you can choose a T8 light tube, and if you need a darker light source, you can choose a T5 light tube.
3/ The energy consumption of LED light tubes T5 and T8 respectively
In terms of energy consumption, because the LED T5 light tube uses rare earth tricolor phosphors, compared with the T8 light tube in terms of energy consumption, the LEDT5 light tube is more energy-efficient.
This has something to do with the volume of the light tube itself. Since the T5 light tube is smaller in size, the probability of the gas touching the tube wall and discharging is greater. Therefore, during the same lighting time, the T5 light tube needs less electricity, and the T5 light tube needs less electricity. The energy saving per unit time of the tube is more than 40% than that of the T8 light tube. If you want better energy saving performance, it is recommended to choose the T5 light tube.
4/ Environmental protection of LED light tubes T5 and T8 respectively
In terms of environmental protection, because the T5 light tube adopts a new technology - using rare earth tricolor phosphors, the loss rate becomes lower. If you compare the service life of T8 and T5 light tubes, the life of T5 light tubes is longer. Therefore, the T5 light tube is more energy-efficient and more environmentally friendly than the T8 light tube.
How to choose the right LED light tube?
When choosing an LED light tube, we can decide from the place to be installed, the required luminosity and the required color temperature.
Because the size of the T5 light tube is small, the brightness generated when the power is turned on is also small, so the T8 light tube is relatively bright. If you choose a bright light tube, choose a T8 light tube, and if you choose a darker light tube, choose a T5 light tube. T8 and T5 light tubes are also different in use and place. T8 light tubes are generally used in large places such as public spaces, factories, hospitals, etc., while T5 light tubes are generally used in home decoration. And in actual use, the thin tube is easier to conceal, and the occasion of use is more flexible, which is why the T5 light tube is used by designers.
And color temperature is also a selection factor. Different color temperatures will produce different emotional reactions, so different places will choose light tubes according to color temperature.
Color temperature is expressed in absolute temperature K and is divided into three categories:
A/ Warm light: The color temperature of warm light is below 3300K, and the color of warm light is similar to that of incandescent light.
The warm color light has more red light components, which brings people a warm, healthy and comfortable feeling.
B/Warm White: Also known as an intermediate color, it has a color temperature between 3300K and 5300K.
The warm white light is soft and makes people feel peaceful, comfortable and pleasant. It is more suitable for hospitals, restaurants, offices, shops, restaurants and other places.
C/Cool color light: Also known as daylight color, its color temperature is above 5300K.
The light source of cool light is closer to natural light, which makes people feel bright and easy to concentrate. It is more suitable for classrooms, design rooms, conference rooms, offices, drawing rooms, library reading rooms, exhibition windows and other places.
Since the T5 light tube is an energy-saving lamp, its luminosity is closer to the daylight color; while the T8 light tube is an old-fashioned fluorescent lamp, its luminosity is closer to the warm color light. Therefore, when choosing lamps and lanterns, you can consider from the four directions of size, luminosity, energy consumption and environmental protection, and then decide which type of light tube to use according to the required installation location, required luminosity and required color temperature.
