What is the operating temperature of LED lights?

The working temperature range and key parameters of LED lights are as follows:

1. Operating temperature range

Conventional LED lighting fixtures:
Environmental temperature: It is usually designed to work stably at -20 ℃~+40 ℃, and some industrial grade products can be extended to -40 ℃~+60 ℃.
Chip junction temperature (key parameter):
The junction temperature (Tj) of general commercial LEDs should be controlled at<85 ℃ (such as in home lighting).
High power LEDs (such as automotive and outdoor lighting) may allow ≤ 120 ℃, but their lifespan will decrease with increasing temperature.
Extreme environment:
Low temperature environment (such as -30 ℃): The startup may slow down, but it usually works.
High temperature environment (>50 ℃): requires heat dissipation design support, otherwise brightness will decrease and lifespan will be shortened.

2. The influence of temperature on LED

Lifespan: For every 10 ℃ increase in junction temperature, the lifespan may decrease by 30% to 50% (such as from 25 ℃ to 85 ℃, the lifespan may decrease from 50000 hours to 20000 hours).
Light efficiency: Light output decreases at high temperatures (e.g. brightness may decrease by 15% to 20% at 85 ℃ compared to 25 ℃).
Color temperature: High temperatures may cause color temperature shift (such as warm cool white light).

3. Heat dissipation design standards

Heat sink temperature: usually 20 ℃~30 ℃ higher than the ambient temperature (such as when the ambient temperature is 25 ℃, the heat sink temperature is about 50 ℃).
Safe touch temperature: The surface temperature of household lighting fixtures is generally controlled at<60 ℃ (to avoid burns).

4. Temperature requirements for different application scenarios

Application type Typical working temperature range Special requirements
Home lighting 0 ℃~40 ℃ Low noise, low temperature rise
Outdoor street lights -30 ℃~50 ℃ Waterproof, dustproof, high heat dissipation
Car headlights -40 ℃~80 ℃, resistant to vibration and fast heat dissipation
Industrial lighting -20 ℃~60 ℃ anti-corrosion, high stability

5. User precautions

Avoid high-temperature sealed environments: embedding LED lights in insulation materials may cause overheating.
Regularly clean the radiator: Dust accumulation can reduce heat dissipation efficiency.
Choose high-quality driving power supply: Overheating of the power supply is a common cause of LED malfunction.
