Why LED Bulbs Don’t Always Live Up to the Hype About Their Life Spans

Old-fashioned Edison light bulbs were replaced by LED bulbs, which held out the promise of greater energy economy and exceptional longevity.
As stated by the U.S. According to the Department of Energy, LEDs can last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs while using at least 75% less electricity.
The modern lights may outlive the conventional bulbs they replaced on the shelf in some situations, but it's unclear how long they last outside of perfect laboratory settings.
"There are a lot of expectations that if you buy an LED lightbulb, you won't ever have to change it," said Nadarajah Narendran, head of research at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. "We need to reset those expectations," the speaker said.
An incandescent light burns out when its glowing filament snaps, which causes it to extinguish with a pop.
The elements that provide illumination in LED bulbs are distinct; they are called light-emitting diodes. They gradually dim over time as opposed to dying suddenly, and by industry standards, their usable life is over when their brightness has decreased by 30%.
At home, there is no practical method to measure this. It may be time to change a bulb if it no longer seems bright enough.
The Federal Trade Commission mandates manufacturers to print how long LED bulbs are anticipated to last on the product package in order to help consumers know what to expect. The duration is typically given in hours or years, with the assumption that the bulbs will provide three hours of lighting per day.
Individual LED packages are tested in a facility to determine the longevity. Each package mimics a Christmas light and includes an LED chip. According to Dr. Narendran, the lab's ambient temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and the LED packages run constantly for 6,000 hours without being turned on and off in accordance with standards set by the Illuminating Engineering Society.
A statistical estimation of the median working life is provided by the resulting lifetime grade. According to a laboratory study, 50% of the tested products would last that long under normal operating conditions and the manufacturer-specified failure criteria if a lightbulb had a rated life of 10,000 hours.
LED Components Affect Durability
An LED package, which is the part of an LED light bulb that emits light, may last ten years or longer under ideal laboratory circumstances. However, in typical use, environmental factors like heat and humidity, the effects of power source cycling, when the lights are turned on and off, or the failure of other components can reduce the life of the bulb.
An Energy Star-certified bulb may have a rated life of 20,000 hours, or roughly 18 years, based on daily use of three hours. Energy Star is a program operated by the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy to promote energy efficiency.
However, in typical use, a lightbulb may contain up to a dozen LEDs connected in series, one or more bulbs may be enclosed in a light fixture that restricts airflow, and the lights may be turned on and off numerous times throughout the day. Under these circumstances, LEDs may dim more quickly than expected.
A bulb's life is always impacted negatively by how and where it is used, according to Dr. Narendran. “It will reduce, not increase, the lifetime.”
According to Dr. Narendran, power source cycling or the effects of heat and humidity are two common causes of lumen degradation. However, other parts of the bulb can also malfunction, shortening its lifespan.
The longevity estimates would change if testing methods were changed to take into consideration all of these circumstances.
Dr. Narendran said, "You would find LED lifetime is not 20 years." "It would be a lot quicker. In some circumstances, it might even be worse than a light bulb. If three lights are forced together in a surface-mounted fixture with little airflow, you might only get 500 hours.
In contrast, a conventional light bulb should last 1,000 hours.
In June, Dr. Narendran and his colleagues, who have been researching the lifespan of LEDs since 1999, confirmed that LEDs have the potential for the longest useful life of all lighting technologies after reviewing reports that had been published internationally in journals, conference proceedings, white papers, and government websites since 2011.
But, they claimed, the industry should define "LED system life" and create a corresponding test to correctly estimate its length rather than rating LED bulbs on the length of time it takes for a single component—the light-emitting diodes—to degrade.
Testing a single LED differs significantly from testing an entire luminaire, according to Dr. Narendran. What consumers should know is that if you buy LED bulbs and put them in a table lamp with open ventilation rather than a fixture where the bulb is trapped with a confined amount of air, the table lamp will get what the package is claiming, as long as you don't switch it on and off frequently.
The International Energy Agency, a group with 30 member nations that was established in 1974 to advance sustainable energy policies, commissioned the literature study. The objective was to assist regulators in establishing sensible LED lifetime standards.
The researchers suggested measuring lumen depreciation as well as disastrous failures brought on by faulty electrical connections or other component failures in order to achieve this.
According to them, the shorter span should be used to determine system lifetime.
