Why Your UV LED PC Cover Turns White
This is a very common problem! The whitening/clouding is called "UV degradation" or "chalking", here's what's happening:
Main Causes
1. 🔬 Polymer Chain Breakdown (Most Common)
Most PC (Polycarbonate) covers contain UV stabilizers added during manufacturing
UV light (especially 365–395nm) breaks down these stabilizer molecules over time
Once stabilizers are depleted, the polymer chains start to oxidize and break
Result: surface becomes hazy, milky, or white
this picture is one of my Vietnam customer who use somedays ( about 15 days ) , the PC cover become white , you can see below pictures :

but we reslove this problem after use Quartz glass , you can see my below picture

2. 🌡️ Heat + UV Combination
UV LEDs generate heat at the base
Heat accelerates the photodegradation process
The cover closest to the LED gets worst damage
3. 💧 Moisture / Humidity
UV breaks polymer bonds → surface becomes micro-porous
Moisture enters these micro-cracks
Creates light scattering → appears white/cloudy
4. 🧪 Photooxidation
UV photons have enough energy to break C-H and C-O bonds in polycarbonate
Creates carbonyl groups on the surface
Surface scatters light instead of transmitting it
Why PC is Especially Vulnerable
Polycarbonate absorbs UV strongly at 295–330nm ↓ But 365/395nm still causes slow degradation ↓ Especially without proper UV-resistant coating
| Material | UV Resistance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PC | ❌ Poor | Yellows/whites quickly |
| UV-stabilized PC | 🟡 Medium | Lasts longer but still degrades |
| Acrylic (PMMA) | ✅ Better | More UV resistant |
| Fused Silica / Quartz | ✅✅ Best | Used in professional UV equipment |
| UV-grade PTFE | ✅✅ Best | Almost no degradation |
How to Prevent It
Short Term
🧴 Apply UV-resistant coating (like Novus Plastic Polish or similar)
Use UV-stabilized PC rated for outdoor/UV exposure
Minimize unnecessary UV exposure time (turn off when not in use)
Long Term / Better Solutions
Replace PC cover with acrylic (PMMA) - much better UV resistance
Use quartz glass cover - ideal for UV applications, zero degradation
Look for covers labeled "UV-grade" or "UV-transparent"
Can You Reverse the Whitening?
| Method | Effectiveness |
|---|---|
| Plastic polish / fine sanding | 🟡 Partially - removes surface layer |
| Toothpaste rubbing | 🟡 Very mild cases only |
| Headlight restoration kit | 🟡 Temporary fix |
| Replacement | ✅ Only real solution |
⚠️ Once the polymer is degraded throughout the bulk (not just surface), polishing won't fully restore clarity.
Your UV LED is doing exactly what UV does - breaking down plastic over time. PC is not ideal for UV applications. For long-term use, switch to a quartz or UV-grade acrylic cover which can withstand UV exposure without clouding. you can see more information on https://www.benweilight.com/lighting-tube-bulb/black-modern-track-lighting.html
