Best Sports Lighting for 2022 - Choosing The Best of Sports and Stadium Lights

What Is Sports Lighting?

Sports lighting is the name type of light that is used to illuminate large areas for sporting events - from kids practices to world championships. Sports Lighting which is grouped with artificial light, is needed when a game is being played indoors or in an outdoor environment after sunset.  Sports lighting is used to provide ample illumination on the playing arena to ensure great visibility for both the players and the audience. A good artificial lighting provides comfortable viewing environment to the players, referees, media crews, spectators as well as those enjoying the event telecast. Sport lights are mounted at tall heights with small beam angles, usually ranging from 12-60 degrees. With these smaller beam angles, there is higher light intensity within that angle that allows bright light to reach the ground from elevated heights. Sport light may be mounted at different heights depending on the venue. Beam angles will vary depending on the height. Some may be mounted as low as 25 feet, but a typical height will be between 20 for tennis and pickleball and 80 feet plus for stadium lighting.

Different Types Of Sports Lighting

Football Light
A majority of the football stadiums are outdoors. To ensure the fun of the game does not end at sunset, lights are crucial. Installing football lights in a field offers many benefits to the fans, players and administration. They include flexibility of planning the matches, security of people in the stadium, and enhancement of the fans’ experience. Good football lighting should have a proper beam angle to create a balance in the stadium. Usually, they are installed at 70ft. high, but in professional stadiums, they can go as high as 250ft above the field. LED lights used have narrow beams optics that project light to the ground without producing glare.

Cricket Field Lights
Proper lighting is key in any sporting activity irrespective of whether the sport is played outside or indoor. Cricket fields need to have an evenly spread illumination for players, referees and the spectators to watch the movements of the ball and puck as they move fast in random directions. The appropriate brightness level for players and spectators in professional matches range from 1500 to 2500 lux, for live broadcasting. The lighting design of a cricket field have lights designed on long poles or way up. This is because the ball can sometimes travel too high when hit and the high lights are key in keeping the ball in sight for everyone involved.
Basketball Court Lighting
If you love to play basketball after a long stressful day, all you need is a great court in the backyard with some quality basketball court lighting. It is important to consider factors that could affect visibility when choosing basketball court lights. This comprises of court spacing, the landscaping of the court, the colors for the walls and the floor, and the placement of the lights. This will ensure all the safety aspects are taken care of.
Golf Course Lighting
While it’s okay to play golf in the day, playing it under the lights after darkness has always been a novelty especially in areas where climate tends to be cooler at night. The main objective when doing golf course or driving range lights is to make it as comfortable as possible for the players and the spectators. The recommended brightness for golf course lights ranges between 80 and 200 lux. Keeping in mind that the flight path of the ball can go fairy high, there should be a vertical brightness ranging between 100 and 150 lux. This vertical brightness gives both the players and the spectators the chance to sufficiently see the entire flight of the ball all the way until it drops even if it’s running at a speed of 200mph.
Tennis Court Lighting
Tennis court lighting is key to meet people’s desire of playing any time of the day or night, indoor or outside. Poor lighting of the tennis court even in the day time have a bad influence on the visual effect and may affect the players’ mood, and that is why good lighting is key. Good visibility of the court enables the players and the spectators to follow the progress of the game. When designing the outdoor tennis court lights installation, it is important to consider the potential impact on the environment of light spill.
