Easy Guide to Dimming LED Lights

The look and feel of a room can be significantly changed by selecting the correct lighting.

Dimmable lights give you a little more flexibility by letting you adjust the brightness to create the ideal ambiance. Dimmable LED lighting has quickly advanced, bringing with it smoother control, silent operation, soft starting, and multi-way dimming. Finding the ideal configuration for your LED lights is now simpler than ever.

The following tutorial can help if you're unsure about where to start with dimmable LED lights. Do not hesitate to get in touch with our helpful and professional customer support team if you require any additional assistance.

Any LED light may be dimmed.

No, not all LED lights can be dimmed. They are not interchangeable, and different circuits used in the construction of LED bulbs decide whether they are dimmable or not. A non-dimmable light bulb may flicker uncomfortably if you attempt to dim it, and you run the risk of breaking the bulb.

On the package and in the product descriptions seen online, every LED light bulb should state whether or not it can be dimmed.

Do I require a particular kind of dimmer switch?

Leading-edge and trailing-edge dimmers are two different varieties of dimmer switch that are available. Although some retrofit LED light bulbs and fixtures include drivers that enable them to work with either type, choosing a trailing-edge dimmer will increase the likelihood that it will function properly.

There are a few causes for this, but the main one is that LED bulbs are not guaranteed to work properly when used with leading-edge dimmers because they have a greater minimum load.

What do gangs do?

The number of switches (or knobs) on the dimmer is known as the gang. You just need a single-gang dimmer switch if a room only has one light fixture. You can independently dim each light fixture if you have more than one (such as several spotlights or a ceiling and wall light) utilizing dimmer switches with more than one gang.

To prevent errors from occuring while utilizing dimmer switches with 2+ gangs, ensure that all connected lamps can be dimmed.

What are the smallest and largest loads?

Dimmer switches typically have a minimum electrical load requirement that must be satisfied in order for the switch to function properly. A bulb (or bulbs) totaling at least 10 watts must be connected to a switch with a minimum load of 10 watts for the switch to work properly. If the brightness is any lower than this, you can notice a flickering or stammering dim.

The opposite is true of the maximum load. To avoid problems, be sure that the combined wattage of all the fixtures and bulbs linked to a dimmer switch does not go over this limit. This is a little trickier with LED bulbs because you can't always accept the maximum load at face value. Continue reading to learn more.

Making a maximum load calculation

As LED bulbs have low wattage, multiple bulbs might theoretically be connected to a single dimmer switch. You could undoubtedly connect 80 5W LED bulbs to a dimmer switch with a 400W maximum load, for example (80 x 5W = 400W). Yet this is not the case. When turned on, LED lights produce an inrush (or spike) of electricity that may briefly exceed the bulb's declared wattage.

To calculate a load for LED dimmers, a popular rule of thumb is to divide the specified maximum load by 10. For instance, a 400W dimmer switch should only be used with LED bulbs that are no more powerful than 40W, or eight 5W bulbs.
