PAR Vs. BR Lamps: Everything You Need To Know (LED Also)

 

Popular flood light options include PAR and BR. These reflector lights, which are often compared, emit focused, directional light that is appropriate for outdoor illumination.

 

It can be difficult to decide between PAR and BR light bulbs because of their many similarities.

 

A flood light that you purchase should suit your needs. To light a large area with just one bulb, for example, you need a lamp with a broader beam angle.

How Do PAR Lamps Work?


Flood lights called PAR lamps produce directional light ideal for highlighting. These lamps can disperse light at smaller angles thanks to their smaller diameters and narrower beam angles.

 

Typically, PAR lights have beam angles of 150, 250, 400, and 450.

 

The term "PAR" stands for a parabolic aluminum reflector. These lamps' directed lighting is provided by the reflector material.

 

Operation of PAR Lamps

 

A parabolic aluminized reflector constructed of a highly reflecting substance is the basic concept of PAR lamps.

 

A focused beam of light is directed outside by the parabola-shaped reflector, much like a spotlight.

 

The principal parts of PAR flood lights are as follows:

 

The light source for PAR lamps, both halogen and incandescent, is a tungsten filament. Semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) serve as the light source in LED PAR light bulbs.

 

A parabolic reflector is in charge of spreading the beam and is primarily constructed from brushed metal surfaces.

 

Between the front of the PAR lamps and the light source is a lens. The beam angle and light intensity are determined by the lens. The result is a light reflection that expands the beam while keeping the focus.

 

PAR light bulb types


Based on the diameter measurements in eighths of an inch, you can select from a variety of PAR lamps. The lamp's diameter is indicated by the number following "PAR".

 

PAR20, PAR30, and PAR38 are the three primary varieties of PAR lamps. The diameter of these lamps is what distinguishes them most.

A PAR38 bulb has a wider diameter of 4.75 inches (38/8), compared to a PAR20 bulb's diameter of 2.5 inches (20/8).

 

Given the aforementioned, PAR lamps are appropriate for outdoor illumination in both business and residential sectors.

 

It's important to note that there are three different types of PAR flood lights.

 

Incandescents: The tungsten filament within these PAR lamps is heated to provide light. The lamps aren't energy-efficient since the heating procedure causes them to output 90% of their energy as heat rather than light.

 

Halogen lights produce light using the same mechanism as incandescent PAR bulbs, but they are more efficient. For easier reuse, they have halogen gas that deposits back the particles that have burned off the tungsten filament.

 

LEDs: In this category, LED PAR lights are the most energy-efficient option. Heat is produced by semiconductor chips in LED PAR bulbs rather than a tungsten filament. They thus consume about 90% less energy than incandescent lamps. The table above, which shows that LED PAR lights consume lesser wattages, confirms this.

 

How Do BR Lamps Work?


A form of flood light with wider beam angles and greater diameters is the BR lamp. These bulbs typically have beam angles of 45 to 120 degrees. They are hence appropriate for illuminating larger spaces.

 

Bulged Reflector is the meaning of the abbreviation "BR". These lamps have an even broader beam angle than their PAR counterparts thanks to the reflector material they utilize.

 

Operation of BR Lamps

 

Although BR lights function similarly to PAR lamps, they emit more light because of a bulged reflector.

 

As a result, BR lamps disperse light rather than having a constant beam angle.

 

This enables them to have a larger beam angle than PAR lamps, making them suited for high-level lighting. They are also ideal for softly illuminating larger regions.

Similar to its PAR cousins, BR lamps are classified into various varieties according to their eighth-inch diameter sizes.

The BR20, BR30, and BR40 lamp types are the most popular ones. These bulbs' diameters are what distinguish them most from one another.

 

BR lamps are available in incandescent, halogen, and LED varieties depending on their energy efficiency. LED BR lamps, like PAR light bulbs, are the most energy-efficient choice.
