The effect of light on dairy cows

The effect of light on dairy cows

Light increases milk production in cows

According to relevant research: the cows under the same conditions receive 9.5 hours, 15 hours, and 18 hours of natural light each day, respectively, for a period of 3 months. Studies have shown that natural light up to 15 hours can increase the intake of roughage (calculated as air-dried matter) by 10%-16%, and increase the milk production of dairy cows by 8%-10%. It is worth noting that the increase in feed was due to an increase in milk production, not light. This will greatly improve the economic benefits of dairy farming.

The right light can improve the performance of dairy cows

Studies agree that the way that light affects mammalian development and productivity is through the optic nerve to receive light stimulation, which affects the release of thyrotropin-releasing hormone and melatonin from the pineal gland and hypothalamus through neuromodulation, thereby regulating the activity of the pituitary gland, causing A series of endocrine changes, such as prolactin, growth hormone, thyroxine, etc., initiate and maintain lactation. Cows are no exception. Cows send inhibitory signals to the pineal gland through a series of interneurons such as the "retina-hypothalamic nerve". Cows rely on the pineal gland to respond to light, and melatonin is a mediator in the photoperiod response. When cows are exposed to light, the melatonin secreted by their pineal glands decreases, and vice versa.

Studies have shown that light intensity above 200 lux can effectively improve the production performance of dairy cows.
