The Other Side Of UV: It Also Promotes Growth

Since the global outbreak of the new crown, much of the "UV" talk in the lighting industry has focused on how the UV spectrum can be used to eliminate or inactivate pathogens such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, but it will not be able to replicate when it is exposed to UV light in the C band.

But a recent partnership between horticultural lighting company Fluence and New Zealand-based agricultural technology specialist BioLumic asks us that UV light can also nurture things. The collaboration was developed by BioLumic through Fluence's lighting hardware and systems for UV formulation.

In a joint statement from the two companies, they point out that reasonable use of UV light during the reproductive phase of plant growth can improve plant yield, health, and quality.

"BioLumic's patented technology significantly optimizes plant performance by harnessing the occurrence of UV light forms to trigger biological events in seeds and seedlings, and BioLumic's scientifically proven UV signaling formulations can significantly improve plant yield, desirable plant traits, and vigor, while also activating the plant's natural resistance to disease and pests resistance to diseases and pests." They said in a press release.

The two companies also said the technology will first work with cannabis growers. Cannabis grow lights, which recently became part of Signify's lineup of horticultural applications, are Fluence's specialty.

"Fluence's goal has always been to drive cutting-edge plant science and agricultural technology innovation," said David Cohen, CEO of Fluence. "We are excited to enter into a partnership with BioLumic to work together toward this goal and create the next generation of leading global lighting solutions for cannabis and produce growers around the world."
