The Relationship Between CRI And Brightness In LED Strip Lights

The Relationship Between CRI and Brightness in LED Strip Lights

By Kevin Rao  November 19,2025

A recent customer experience clearly demonstrates a fundamental principle in LED technology. Initially requesting custom strips with CRI>90, the customer compared samples of both CRI>90 and CRI>80 options, and ultimately selected the CRI>80 strips. This decision highlights the essential trade-off between color accuracy and brightness that defines LED strip selection.

Understanding CRIinfo-300-182

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures a light source's ability to reveal objects' true colors compared to natural sunlight, which has a perfect CRI of 100. The scale ranges from 0 to 100, with higher values indicating superior color rendering capability.

The Science Behind the Trade-off

Most white LEDs create light by combining blue LED chips with yellow phosphors. While this produces white light effectively, the resulting spectrum lacks sufficient red components, typically limiting standard LEDs to CRI values between 70-80.

To achieve higher CRI ratings (90+), manufacturers add red and sometimes green phosphors to create a more balanced spectrum. However, these additional phosphors have lower conversion efficiency and absorb some light energy rather than transmitting it. This process creates the fundamental compromise: improved color accuracy comes at the cost of reduced overall brightness.

Practical Implications

In practical terms, when comparing LED strips with identical power consumption and specifications:

CRI>90 strips typically produce 15-25% fewer lumens than CRI>80 equivalents

The higher the CRI, the greater the reduction in luminous output

Application Guidelines

Choose CRI>80 strips when:

Maximum brightness is the priority

For general ambient lighting

In architectural accent applications

Budget constraints are a concern

Opt for CRI>90 strips when:

Color accuracy is critical (art galleries, retail displays)

For food preparation areas

In photography or medical environments

Applications requiring precise color discrimination

Industry Reality

Currently, no commercially viable method exists to significantly increase CRI without sacrificing luminous efficiency. This balance between color quality and brightness remains a fundamental characteristic of LED technology that designers must consider when selecting strips for specific applications.

Understanding this relationship ensures you choose the optimal solution for your project, whether prioritizing brilliant illumination or perfect color reproduction.
