What Are the Differences Between Single/Double-Ended LED Tubes and Types A, B, AB?

Upgrading from fluorescent to LED tube lighting is a smart move for energy savings and efficiency-but understanding the technical differences between LED power tubes can be challenging. Terms like "single ended," "double ended," "Type A," and "Type B" may sound confusing, but don't worry-this guide breaks down the key differences to help you choose the best option for your needs.
Single Ended vs. Double Ended LED Tubes
Single Ended Tubes:
In these tubes, both the live and neutral pins are located on the same end. They require a non-shunted socket and perform best when the existing fluorescent ballast is removed. This helps maximize efficiency and simplifies future maintenance.
Double Ended Tubes:
Here, the live and neutral pins are placed on opposite ends. These tubes can work with either shunted or non-shunted sockets and offer more flexibility in wiring configurations.
Comparing Type A, Type B, and Type AB LED Tubes
Type A (Plug-and-Play | Ballast Compatible)
Type A tubes are the easiest to install. They work with your existing fluorescent ballast-no rewiring or ballast removal is needed. While convenient and double-ended only, they tend to be more expensive. Be aware that if the ballast fails in the future, the tube won't light up until the ballast is replaced or bypassed.

Type B (Ballast Bypass | Direct Wire)
Type B tubes require direct wiring and do not use the existing ballast. Although installation is more involved (ballast removal and non-shunted sockets are necessary), these tubes offer higher energy efficiency and eliminate the risk of future ballast failure. They are available in both single and double-ended versions.

Type AB (Universal | Hybrid)
Type AB tubes offer the best of both worlds. They can operate either with the ballast (like Type A) or be directly wired (like Type B). This flexibility makes them a popular choice for those who want ease of installation now and the option to bypass the ballast later without replacing the tube.

Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Type A if you want a quick, easy installation and your ballast is relatively new.
Choose Type B for maximum efficiency and long-term reliability.
Choose Type AB for flexibility and future-proofing.
⚠️ Always confirm ballast and socket compatibility with the manufacturer before making a purchase.
